About the Role:
A Photo Editor for The New York Times has a creative eye and an innovative approach to visual formats and mobile-focused presentations. You should bring thoughtful technical skills and journalistic judgment to join a team creating visual journalism—still and video— for breaking news, features and enterprise stories for on- and off-platform publishing.
The primary duties of the job are to conceptualize and assign photography and video for the New York Times' Washington D.C. report, and to select and publish images and video for multiple platforms of The New York Times. You will work across a range of beats covered by the bureau, including the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, the intelligence agencies, national security, domestic policy, healthcare and other issues.
You will assign and research a wide array of news and feature photographs and video, working productively with staff photographers, freelance photographers, wire services, agencies and all other sources of pictures, as well as editors, designers, and reporters in the newsroom. You will engage our staff and freelance photographers to identify and develop pitches with strong visual potential, producing strong photographic, video and multimedia displays with an eye toward innovative digital story forms and presentations.
You have a strong demonstrable experience with multimedia, journalism and photography of all kinds and you have a comprehensive understanding of the DC bureau's coverage areas and how to effectively cover them in distinctive ways. You have a broad knowledge of the current photographic, video, visual and social media landscape, including digitally innovative formats and mobile-first multimedia presentations. You are a team player and and are adept at initiating and developing ideas for photographs, short video clips and visual stories in different formats.
This is an in-office position based in Washington, D.C. and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Working under the Editor of Digital News Design, you will work in collaboration with Video and Graphics leadership to oversee motion graphics across the breadth of our video work, with an eye toward a coherent style that is responsive to the editorial needs of individual stories and formats. Basic Qualifications:
8+ years of design experience, including collaborative design and project management for visual journalism.

Salary range
A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $100,000 to $150,000. The New York Times Opinion desk is looking for a digital designer to join our award-winning design team. You will design and art direct compelling mobile-first visual storytelling products and experiences, prioritizing UX performance and applying experimentation with the newest technology. You will work collaboratively with other creative, technical and editorial teams, responsible for coordinating multiple assets and contributors and meeting deadlines that follow audience plans and deadlines.
You have a portfolio demonstrating talent in aesthetics, typography, layout, motion, storytelling techniques, and user-centered design principles. About the Role, Mission or Department Overview
The New York Times Audience department is hiring an Associate Audience Editor to support the rollout and analysis of our video projects across on-site and off-platform channels. This role will work closely with the leader of video's audience efforts to implement, analyze, and refine distribution strategies to maximize the reach and impact of Times video projects across platforms, including both linear videos and multimedia stories. You will also help build weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports for both onsite and off-platform channels, including competitive analysis, to inform and refine our strategy.
You have experience developing video rollout strategies across platforms and assessing their success, with a strong understanding of all mainstream social video platforms, particularly YouTube and TikTok. We are looking for someone with a proven track record of driving video engagement and reach, and who is eager to refine and expand our distribution strategies to maximize the reach and impact of Times video.

Responsibilities:
Support video rollout plans across on-site and off-platform channels, coordinating with video journalists and senior producers to support video initiatives across the desk's video projects, including visual articles, visual investigations, and videos featuring reporters on camera.
Optimize headlines, descriptions, and metadata to enhance searchability and discovery; tailoring copy to fit platform styles while maintaining editorial integrity.
Implement social distribution plans with video journalists and producers to maximize the reach and impact of our video journalism.
Work on coverage plans for tentpole events.
Work closely with key editorial and audience teams—including search, social, community, homepage, notifications, and newsletters—to align coverage strategies and ensure a cohesive rollout of all of our video projects across platforms.
Track and analyze competitors' video performance in breaking news and major stories, identifying insights to help benchmark and refine our approach.

About the Role:
The Upshot is a versatile, multidisciplinary team in the New York Times newsroom whose mission is to help our readers understand the news — and to find new ways to explain the world we're living in.

The goal is to create a modern, intelligent Discovery Engine that offers a variety of content, including video, audio, summaries, and articles. You will navigate deep technical complexity and high-stakes organizational dependencies. You will bridge the gap between our core internal data providers and our AI application builders to ensure our AI has Times expertise at its heart.

Your Role:
As a Senior Product Manager, you will be a key member of the AI Platforms portfolio. You will oversee context engineering for AI applications at The Times, starting with the scaling and launch of a modern content retrieval product. You will be a key collaborator with other data platforms at The Times to build a new infrastructure layer for the A.I. era. And you will work with consumer product teams to advance content and user data capabilities to advance NAPP and The Times' product development lifecycle, from prototyping to production.
Responsibilities:
Own the Discovery Engine Roadmap: Lead the development of the Discovery Engine from to full production migration, including deep collaboration with consumer teams on NAPP and across the company.
Cross-Functional Dependency Management: Serve as the primary partner for our Publishing, Data Platforms and the ML Function to secure clean data feeds and manage the creation and use of embeddings for text and users.
Retrieval & Ranking Strategy: Define and tune the hybrid search logic that balances semantic similarity, keyword match, and personalization signals to ensure high-quality retrieval for diverse AI-powered use cases.
Data Enrichment & Ingestion: Oversee the pipelines for AI-generated metadata – including editor-in-the-loop workflows – and ensure non-text assets like video and audio transcripts are indexed and searchable.
Validation & Performance: Define and monitor technical KPIs, including P95 query latency, throughput, retrieval accuracy, cost and downstream AI application performance using tools like Braintrust and StatSig in partnership with downstream product teams.
Vendor Evaluations: Lead technical pilots (e.g. vector databases, knowledge graphs) to de-risk architectural decisions and inform our long-term build-vs-buy strategy.
Visioning: Identify and scope opportunities for infrastructure that would provide additional context or unlock new capabilities for The Times (for example, Knowledge Graphs or semantic data layers).
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:
5+ years of Product Management experience, with a focus on high-scale backend systems, search infrastructure, or data platforms.
Deep technical literacy in AI/ML. Demonstrated experience with vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, turbopuffer), embeddings, and RAG architectures.
Experience discussing complex technical dependencies, API design, and system boundaries with engineering partners.
Data Fluency and experience working with large-scale data pipelines (ETL/ELT) and defining metadata schemas for diverse content types.
Experience working across organizational silos (Engineering, Data Science, and Product).

About the Role

The Graphics team at The New York Times is seeking a versatile and experienced visual editor to cover breaking news on the weekend and to publish timely graphics and visual stories.
The job’s primary responsibilities are to create maps, diagrams and other graphics for breaking news and planned stories as part of a regular weekend shift. You will identify sharp visual angles and collaborate with other Graphics staff and Times journalists to publish timely visual stories. You will conceive of new lines of reporting, execute fast-turn graphics, and produce and edit news graphics on deadline.
On some occasions, your work will include editing responsibilities for breaking news coverage when you are working with other Graphics staff and journalists from other desks.

The Digital News Design team is looking for a digitally focused art director and designer. You have experience in visual journalism and social media. You will design and produce material including templates, patterns and unique formats for several platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.
As the senior designer and art director on the Social Visuals team, you will collaborate with reporters, editors, producers and designers to craft digital assets and visual experiences for our various social media channels. You will assess the needs and possibilities for typography, video, photography, illustration, audio, and animations. You will use journalistic judgment, visual creativity and innovation while ensuring accuracy, clarity, and validity of the content presented. Role Summary
As a Story Desk Editor, you will be part of the Story Management Desk (SMD), a unified desk that replaces the legacy assignment and digital desks. The SMD model ensures a single, streamlined workflow for planning, producing and curating stories across platforms.
You will lead coverage during breaking news, shape daily story planning, and curate content across platforms. This position requires decisive editorial judgment, strong writing skills, and the ability to thrive under tight deadlines. You will collaborate with MSJs, producers and photojournalists to deliver accurate, relevant and engaging stories that serve the community.
Responsibilities:
• Lead and communicate newsroom coverage during breaking news, ensuring accuracy, urgency and balance
• Identify and plan stories that matter most to the community, using editorial judgment and social listening
• Create and edit engaging content for digital platforms: website, mobile app and streaming,
• Guide newsroom logistics and provide editorial support for MSJs, producers, and photojournalists
