Role Overview
We are seeking an accomplished Principal Engineer to lead the technical architecture and evolution of our hybrid digital ecosystem. In this pivotal role, you will drive the strategic integration of multi-modal AI into our core infrastructure while architecting an omnichannel platform capable of supporting complex customer journeys. You will balance the adoption of proven third-party AI solutions (OpenAI, Anthropic) with the development of proprietary optimizations where they deliver a competitive advantage. The Search Systems team at MongoDB builds the core infrastructure behind MongoDB Search and Vector Search. Our mission is to make advanced search capabilities feel native to the database, so developers can build powerful, scalable applications without standing up separate systems or compromising transactional performance.
We are the team behind mongot, the indexing and query execution engine that powers Search and Vector Search across MongoDB Atlas and self-managed deployments. Our work sits at the intersection of distributed systems, databases, and search infrastructure. We integrate Apache Lucene with MongoDB using native query operators like $search and $vectorSearch, build asynchronous change-stream-driven indexing pipelines that scale independently from transactional workloads, and support deployments across cloud, on-prem, and hybrid environments. Engineers on this team own meaningful subsystems, influence architectural decisions, and work on core database technology used by developers globally.
This role can be based out of our Toronto office or remotely in Canada.
This is a rare opportunity to set the technical direction for one of MongoDB's most strategic investments. You will define the architecture of a self-contained search system that spans Community, Enterprise, and Atlas, while guiding how we integrate AI-native capabilities from Voyage AI. This is not a chance to influence a feature. It is a chance to shape the foundation of how developers everywhere build applications with MongoDB.

Scale-First Thinkers. You identify risks before they surface. You think in migration paths, failure modes, and second-order architectural consequences, not just implementation details.
Technical Force Multipliers. You create leverage across teams. You challenge requirements rather than execute them, set technical direction independently, and hold a high bar for architectural clarity whether you are mentoring a struggling engineer or reviewing a design with a principal.
Systems Intuitionists. You connect operational constraints to design decisions in concrete terms. You know why fsync matters. You know how atomic operations behave under contention. You have built systems where these things were not hypothetical.
In 3 months: You have developed deep familiarity with the core mongot and Mongo Management Service repos and shipped your first meaningful contribution.
In 6 months: You are driving features that build out new infrastructure for Atlas Search and have identified at least one systemic risk or architectural gap the team had not fully articulated.
In 12 months: You are building POCs, setting technical direction on complex cross-team projects, and actively shaping what the next generation of MongoDB Search looks like.

The Okta Digital Credentials Team
The Okta Digital Credentials team is building the future of digital identity. The way we prove our identity online is undergoing a fundamental shift, moving from scanning physical documents to using secure, portable digital credentials. In a world with AI-driven fraud, one-time verification is no longer enough; the industry needs a reusable, tamper-proof way to prove identity at scale.

The Staff Software Engineer Opportunity
As a Staff Backend Engineer on the Okta Digital Credentials (ODC) team, you will define the technical direction of a new VDC identity ecosystem and set the standard for how we build it.
This role demands deep technical expertise in backend architecture and the ability to influence decisions across the team and adjacent engineering groups. You will thrive in a fast-paced, zero-to-one environment, cutting through ambiguity to drive product-market fit.
A distinctive part of this role is setting the team's standard for AI-native engineering. This isn't about using autocomplete faster - it's about rethinking how a small, senior team ships production-quality code at pace. In practice, that means using AI tools for architectural reasoning and design review, generating and validating test coverage, accelerating code review cycles, and helping engineers build judgment about when AI output is trustworthy and when it isn't. You'll define what "good" looks like here and bring the team along.

About the Role:

The AI Infrastructure Operations Engineer (SiteOps) is an entry-level individual contributor role focused on the deployment, bring-up, monitoring, and first-line troubleshooting of Cerebras AI infrastructure in data center environments. We're hiring a Principal Engineer for our Inference Cloud Platform. This team owns the cloud layer behind our Inference Service, including availability, latency, reliability, and multi-region scale.
This is one of the most senior IC roles on the team, for someone who can identify the highest-leverage platform problems, set direction across multiple teams, define long-term architecture, and write production code on critical paths.
Many of the key decisions are ambiguous at the outset; you’ll need to frame the problem, make tradeoffs, and drive execution without a clear spec.

Lead technical delivery for enterprise clients. You’re the most senior technical person in the room on our biggest engagements. You decide what’s feasible, design the architecture, and make sure it ships. When a client executive asks “can we do this?” — you’re the one who answers.
Build how we deliver, not just what we deliver. One client engagement works because of talented people and brute effort. Ten engagements work because of systems. You design the repeatable model — how we scope, staff, build, and deploy — so the team can run engagements without you in every meeting. That means building discovery frameworks, reference architectures, deployment templates, and evaluation routines that actually get used.
Hire and develop the engineering team. You set the bar, own the pipeline, and make the calls on who joins. We need people who can build with high autonomy in ambiguous environments, and you know how to find them. You also know how to make good engineers better through architecture guidance, code review, and honest feedback.
Own platform and infrastructure decisions. Build vs. buy, tooling, deployment, security — you make the calls. A Principal Engineer handles day-to-day infrastructure execution; you set priorities and architectural direction.
Shape our AI strategy through the lens of what actually ships. You have real opinions on LLM orchestration, RAG, agents, evaluation, and fine-tuning — formed by building things, not reading about them. You decide which technical bets we make and which we skip, based on what creates value for clients, not what looks good on a slide.
Bonus points for: you’ve scaled a startup or early-stage company before — built the team, built the systems, lived through the growing pains; experience in a services or consultancy model (SOWs, staffing, client delivery); a network of engineers you’ve worked with and would hire again.
