ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.
ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network helps produce vital, investigative journalism in communities where such stories would otherwise not be done. Now entering its ninth year, the program will be taking on 15 new partnerships over the course of 2026.
Applications for all 15 projects are open now and will be considered on a rolling basis using the deadlines below. There will be three fellowship periods and we will select five fellows for each round:
For these partnerships, ProPublica will provide a grant, to be paid in monthly installments, to the selected newsroom reflecting the annual salary (up to $80,000 plus a 25% allowance for benefits) for one full-time reporter in each newsroom. Successful candidates will have a proven track record of investigative reporting and impact, and will provide a memo about the project they’re proposing working on for the duration of the one-year partnership.
Strong applications will express why the project needs to be told in your community — we’re eager for projects that can’t be done anywhere else. They will also explain how the project would benefit from this collaboration, potentially including the role that our data, research and engagement reporting resources could play, and they will discuss how the project may resonate with both local and national audiences.
Once accepted, local reporters will work from and report to their home newsrooms while receiving extensive support and guidance for their work from ProPublica, including collaboration with a senior editor and access to the nonprofit newsroom’s expertise. The work will be published or broadcast by your newsroom and simultaneously by ProPublica.
ProPublica reporters and editors are available to answer questions or to give you feedback on your application before you submit it. Please reach us at Local.Reporting@propublica.org.
We are unable to accept applications via email. No phone calls, please.
We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities. We are an equal opportunity employer and prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age or any other status protected under applicable law.

About Us: Straight Arrow is fearlessly dedicated to exposing the hard truths in the stories that are dividing Americans today. We prize stories that connect to our audiences’ daily lives. Check us out at www.san.com and on the Straight Arrow mobile app.
About this role:
Straight Arrow is looking for a Food and Agriculture Reporter to cover how America gets fed – and why that process has become a source of economic stress, political conflict and cultural confusion. This role focuses on the systems behind what we eat: farming, food production, supply chains, pricing, policy and environmental impact, and how those forces collide on grocery shelves and restaurant menus.
Food prices, supply‑chain disruptions, environmental pressures and debates over farming practices have become national flashpoints. At the same time, consolidation in agribusiness, antitrust enforcement, lawsuits and regulatory battles are reshaping the food economy behind the scenes, alongside shifting geopolitics. Americans feel the impact of these dynamics daily, but the mechanics are often hidden or reduced to partisan talking points. This reporter will dig into those mechanics, breaking original stories, exposing pressure points and decoding the narratives that surround them.
We’re looking for a reporter who can connect what happens on farms, in factories, in boardrooms and in courtrooms to the lived experience of everyone who eats – including how those forces surface in grocery aisles, restaurant menus and food culture more broadly. The ideal candidate has a strong scoop instinct, is comfortable working with documents and data, and can balance fast‑moving news with deeper enterprise and accountability reporting that makes sense of food both as an economic system and a cultural artifact.
This role applies to our core mission of exposing how systems and narratives shape people’s lives. In the food economy, that means showing how power structures and information framing determine what Americans eat and pay for, often without their knowledge.

We will stop accepting applications for this role on Friday, May 29th at 3:00PM EDT.
We’re looking for a driven reporter to take on compelling stories that are grounded in the Southwest but have national resonance — work that is compelling, revelatory and brings about change.
The Southwest has been the focus of some of ProPublica’s most ambitious coverage. Our investigations have exposed the Trump administration misrepresenting federal preparedness to combat wildfires, the growing subsidization of and ecological devastation caused by grazing on public lands, an Arizona county’s costly and ineffective pursuit of the death penalty, scientists’ destruction of Indigenous human remains, Albuquerque, New Mexico’s criminalization of homelessness and Utah officials’ efforts to undermine solar energy.
You’ll join a team covering the Southwest with a focus on Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah.
We’re interested in pitches for covering issues affecting members of the region’s many federally registered tribes, and for reporting on state government accountability, particularly in Arizona or Utah.
We’re looking for a reporter who:
This job is full time and includes benefits. We will consider applicants who already live in or are willing to relocate to our Southwest coverage area. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.
The expected salary range for this position is $95,000 to $140,000.
This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a person’s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.
We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.
Questions? Send an email to talent@propublica.org.
(Here is a breakdown of our staff.) ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.
Applications will be accepted through at least May 15, 2026, at 12:00 PM ET.
Engagement reporters do ProPublica’s signature crowdsourced investigations, using everything from callouts and tip lines to citizen-fueled science. As an engagement reporter, you’ll team up with colleagues across the country to gather evidence and receipts for hard-hitting, community-driven stories. You may also work with external partners on long- and short-term projects through our Local Reporting Network. You’ll find and reach people who have important stories to tell, figure out how to include them in the reporting process and work on journalism that could help improve their lives. You’ll likely come across more stories and new leads in the process.
Like everyone in our newsroom, our team focuses on accountability journalism and measures success by impact. We’ve worked with communities to tell thousands of people’s stories, including educators, parents, mental health providers, wildfire survivors, migrant dairy farm workers, vulnerable workers and residents living near toxic hot spots. We’ve filled information gaps with calculators, guides and letter generators. And we’ve done our best to reach people in the spaces where they gather, both online and off. This journalism has led to impact big and small, from equipping patients with better information to a promised $2 billion to fix Idaho public school buildings.
What You’ll Do Here:
This job is full time and includes benefits. ProPublica is based in New York, but we’re open to remote candidates. We have offices in New York City; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Chicago; Phoenix; and Berkeley, California. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.
The expected salary range for this position is $85,000 to $120,000.
This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a person’s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.
You Should Apply If:
This role will involve occasional travel for team retreats, conferences and reporting projects.
Work examples are the most important part of this application.
The application form will require you to send us three projects from your portfolio, and it will give you the space to walk us through your own contributions to those clips. Take advantage of this to tell us everything you did, from behind-the-scenes wins you’re proud of to how you helped your colleagues. Let us know how your engagement and outreach work shaped the output. Don’t be shy — tell us what succeeded, including numbers and evidence of impact, and feel free to share details on how you’d do it differently next time.
Make sure to read the section above, titled “You Should Apply If,” because it’s also our evaluation criteria for the position. Use your projects and the rest of your application to show us that you’ve got the skills we’ve listed or why the skills you have are the ones we actually need.
We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.
Questions? Send an email to talent@propublica.org.
No phone calls, please.

ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.
We are seeking an experienced investigative journalist to help expand our coverage of the Pentagon and the U.S. armed forces. The Department of Defense is the government’s largest agency, with a budget of nearly $1 trillion. Its operations at home and abroad are testing long-standing alliances and rules of engagement, just as policy changes have made its activities, and its leaders, harder to scrutinize. We’re looking for someone to add to ProPublica’s long history of holding this branch of government to account through deep reporting that has an impact.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of breaking through the wall of secrecy surrounding so much of what the U.S. military does; an insider’s understanding of its hierarchy, codes and traditions; and an outsider’s healthy curiosity and skepticism. They will be knowledgeable about the connections between the various agencies and the companies that influence or benefit from national security policies. They will have the kinds of sources who help them to both get behind the scenes of how decisions and policies are made and document their impact. And they will have demonstrated an ability to responsibly handle sensitive information.
This reporter will be based in ProPublica’s Washington, D.C., office and will be part of a team assigned to nail big scoops and land agenda-setting investigations. Candidates must be willing to collaborate not only with their colleagues on the military beat but also with those working in other coverage areas.

ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.
While the vast majority of ProPublica’s work comes from our staff, we occasionally consider supporting ambitious accountability stories or projects from independent journalists whose ideas align with the mission of our organization.
Here’s what journalists submitting proposals should know.
We’re open to investigations that are revelatory or substantially advance what is known on a subject of importance. The investigation should have the potential to trigger needed reforms by identifying a problem, who’s responsible and what should change. It should also clearly show harm. The investigation can be rooted in a place or focus on a person, but it should illuminate an issue of broader relevance.
The best proposals have a clear hypothesis, typically based on significant reporting: They don’t wonder whether something bad is happening, they know it. Please include not only a general description of the topic, but also a sense of the anecdotes/data/documents you have gathered, what you expect to find and possible accountability stories you want to tell.
In addition, applicants should detail, as much as is possible at the outset, what an investigation will require: data work, travel, obtaining public records. It’s also important for us to know what data, documents and/or source relationships the reporter already has. Finally, we’d like to hear a bit about why you are particularly suited to do this investigation.
We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, and aim to notify candidates regarding your proposals within two weeks of submission. Questions? Send an email to talent@propublica.org. No phone calls, please.
For those proposals we accept, we pay competitive freelance rates, including reporting expenses. Freelancers are independent contractors and will not be treated by ProPublica as employees for any purpose.
Independent contractors are responsible for paying any required taxes on any compensation received and for understanding the applicable tax laws. We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, and aim to notify candidates regarding your proposals within two weeks of submission.
We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

About Us: Straight Arrow is fearlessly dedicated to exposing the hard truths in the stories that are dividing Americans today. We prize stories that connect to our audiences’ daily lives. Check us out at www.san.com and on the Straight Arrow mobile app.
About this role:
SAN is hiring a remote Media, Bias and Algorithms Reporter to investigate how information is built, distributed, distorted and amplified in the digital age – and to explain it with clarity, not cynicism. This is not a traditional media‑industry beat. You won’t often cover newsroom shuffles or corporate M&A. You’ll probe the deeper machinery of the modern information environment: the recommendation engines behind what people see, the structural incentives that create bias (intentional or not), the platforms that mediate nearly every public conversation, and the invisible feedback loops that shape how society understands current events.
People increasingly experience the world through systems they don’t control and can barely see. Audiences know bias exists, but most have no way of understanding how it works or why narratives diverge so dramatically across outlets and platforms. Your reporting will give them that power. You’ll decode competing narratives, reveal blind spots in media framing, contextualize how algorithms elevate or suppress certain stories, and help audiences understand why people can see the same event as two different realities.
This beat taps directly into one of the country’s most widespread frustrations: navigating a chaotic information landscape where everyone senses distortion, but few understand its mechanics. It is central to SAN’s mission and a clear opportunity for differentiation, filling a gap the broader media rarely covers with depth or transparency. Your work will provide clarity where there is confusion, depth where there is noise, and context where there is polarization. If you want to help audiences see the whole board – not just the headlines – this is the beat for you.

At Burson, we’re an agency of learn-it-alls. We recognize that the things we do best, creativity and communications, require a level of nuanced understanding. That’s why it’s imperative for us to hire extraordinarily talented people of all backgrounds and identities. Without that we can’t do the essential work of inspiring bold ideas, fostering constructive dialogue, cultivating meaningful experiences, and driving innovation and creativity for our partners. Your unique point of view—your talent—is what makes you a #BursonPerson, and it’s how we deliver exceptional results for our clients, together.
We believe the best work happens when we're together, fostering creativity, collaboration, and connection. That's why we’ve adopted a hybrid approach, with teams in the office around four days a week. If you require accommodations or flexibility, please discuss this with the hiring team during the interview process.
