The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Staff Writer in the Communications and Marketing Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY, Washington, D.C., or San Francisco, CA. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. This is a 2-year term-limited position.

The ACLU Communications & Marketing department creates, maintains, and expands message narratives to engage our supporters and other target audiences, to help protect and expand civil liberties and civil rights, and illustrate the value and impact of the ACLU’s transformational work. WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Head of Marketing Channels, the Staff Writer will take the lead in scripting long-form video content and all related adaptations for social media, including but not limited to video essays, scripted adaptations of ACLU reports, and partnership appearances; long-form editorial assets, including but not limited to op-eds or brand proposals; and related ad copy as needed.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Conceive, pitch, and write original, well-researched, audience-driven, long-form video during proactive and reactive moments, contributing to content that amplifies, educates, and drives attention to the proactive and reactive work of our organization 
• Proofread and prepare video scripts to ensure clarity, accuracy, consistency, and accessibility 
• Adapt other content, including explainers, op-eds, data-driven reports, and first-person narratives, into compelling video content, as assigned 
• Collaborate with the other teams in the Marketing Channels Unit — paid media, social media, earned media and strategic engagement, and e-commerce and merchandising — to support content development at all stages of production 
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders and spokespeople to deliver scripts that suit a variety of formats, including for external verticals and partnerships, delivering content with a high degree of editorial quality and self-review 
• Coordinate with Head of Marketing Channels, communications strategist, and other relevant stakeholders to shepherd content through cross-departmental reviews 
• Assist with special projects including advertising content, online actions and advocacy campaigns, live social media events, and communications campaigns to support ACLU programs 
• Provide copywriting support for various communications and marketing materials, including blogs, web pages, paid ads, and social media 
• Stay up-to-date and informed about the ACLU’s issues and positions, and understand cultural conversations around social justice 
• Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• Professional experience in one or a combination of the following areas: arts and entertainment media, digital communications, journalism, screenwriting, and storytelling 
• Experience developing and writing serialized video content optimized for YouTube, with a strong understanding of episodic storytelling, audience retention, platform best practices, and long-form narrative formats 
• Ability to produce copy on deadline, in breaking news settings and during rapid response periods 
• Experience writing engaging, information-rich content on complex, intersectional issues for a national, generalist audience that is on-brand and on-message 
• Experience working on issue-based advocacy campaigns, and in communicating complex issues to a variety of owned and targeted audiences. 
• Proven ability to produce and edit content that is persuasive, issue-driven and compels people to take action 
• Ability to identify and manage multiple content pieces across multiple subject areas simultaneously; and make recommendations for how to execute competing priorities 
• Familiarity with and experience writing about social justice issues and a demonstrated interest in civil liberties and civil rights and passion for the work of the ACLU

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Director of Social Media, the Senior Content Strategist will be responsible for leading development and execution of the ACLU's YouTube strategy, with SEO-informed editorial strategies and content promotion plans that leverage all channels in the ACLU’s social media program. In partnership with the Social Media Manager, communications strategists, and multimedia producers, the Senior Content Strategist will lead creation of compelling, platform-specific content to meet the ACLU’s communications, legal, advocacy, and development goals on YouTube, integrating YouTube thoughtfully into the department’s strategic communications plans. The Senior Content Strategist will support external partnerships and collaborations, identify high-impact partnership opportunities, and partner with other teams within Communications & Marketing or Development departments, to livestream key engagements or produce YouTube-first events.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Set the long-term vision, goal, strategies and tactics to scale the ACLU’s YouTube channel, supporting a daily social video program that thoughtfully accounts for organizational priorities, the ACLU’s unique brand identity, the daily news cycle, and emerging trends. 
• Project manage the end-to-end production of YouTube content, including talent booking, editorial calendaring, digital strategy, and content planning, in close partnership with the ACLU’s social media, multimedia, program communications, earned media, storytelling, and artists and influencer teams. 
• Develop content plans that position the ACLU as a thought leader on YouTube, accounting for an ideologically diverse nationwide audience 
• Craft and implement creative, multi-faceted strategies for advocacy, public education, live events, and paid media campaigns on YouTube, collaborating with other teams to support content plans as needed 
• Align YouTube content planning and editorial calendar with broader social media and communications strategy, including cross-channel adaptations and multi-platform partnerships 
• Work with the Social Media and Multimedia teams to develop formats and optimize videos, headlines, metadata, and thumbnails for YouTube 
• Monitor and report on strategic insights and video analytics, to inform decision-making and ensure content is optimized for audience growth 
• Initiate and maintain strong relationships with YouTube; gather and prioritize technical platform requirements 
• Create and maintain internal documentation for workflows across teams 
• Cultivate relationships with YouTube influencers in partnership with the Artist and Influencer Engagement team and Media and Strategic Engagement team

Through our messaging, engagement with newsmakers, our written content, creative branding, and visual identity, we encourage support for the ACLU and help to build a more perfect union. The Media and Strategic Engagement team works to bring the ACLU’s work to the most strategic audience. It strengthens and deepens our relationships with media outlets and journalists, identifies opportunities to engage with new media outlets and audiences, and ensures better coordination for paid media work. The team’s thought leadership efforts ensure our leaders and experts continue to expand their profile to elevate ACLU's work and mission and coordinates appearances and writings as part of our strategic goals.

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Director of Media and Strategic Engagement, the Earned Media Strategist will be at the frontlines of ACLU’s media relations work, staffing key spokespeople as needed, with an emphasis on the organization's electoral communications, providing media support to position the organization’s spokespeople as thought leaders and maximize the visibility of our work to advance our electoral and advocacy goals.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Pitching and preparing ACLU spokespeople for media appearances, leveraging an existing portfolio of key reporter relationships within the political media industry and leading industry thought leaders 
• Executing strategic engagements in rapid response environments (press conferences, sponsorships, event appearances and speaking engagements, or other high visibility events requiring ACLU principals on short notice) 
• Staff key organization principals at media appearances and strategic engagements as needed, including events that require travel 
• Secondary support for staffing key partners, such as celebrity ambassadors or influencers, during strategic engagements 
• Help prepare briefing materials and prep sessions for external engagements for senior staff, including mock interviews as needed 
• Support cross-organization collaboration regarding the deployment of organization spokespeople, building earned media or strategic engagement strategies around related appearances of these principals driven by Development, NPAD, Legal, or other departments 
• Support the maintenance of spokesperson biographies, headshots, and other portfolio items 
• Map and build relationships with key national media outlets, with an emphasis on emerging outlets or impactful independent reporters in the digital media ecosystem 
• Lead communications and positioning strategies, as well as outreach, for high-level principals and projects and announcements, as assigned by senior communications leadership. Assist in the development of materials or preparations for events that further the organization’s thought leadership, including op-eds, press conferences, and speaking engagements at high visibility events 
• Secondary coverage for communications strategists on leave or in pressing rapid response moments

• The ability to demonstrate grace under pressure and provide an organized, calming experience for principals.

• Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office. 
• Familiarity with Cision is preferred.

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Head of Strategic Communications, the Director of Strategic Communications will advance communications initiatives in collaboration with a team of communications and marketing professionals, and other members of ACLU’s digital, legal, advocacy, fundraising, and affiliate support teams. The Director will lead the development and execution of integrated communications strategies for high priority campaigns, issues and spokespeople. They will manage communications strategists who advance key programmatic areas, including immigration, human rights, racial justice, and criminal justice.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Design and implement integrated communications campaigns for priority projects and initiatives, including multi-issue campaigns, nationwide rallies and other special projects. Engage a suite of tactics to develop said plans – including earned media, creator engagement, paid advertising, social media, multimedia, email/SMS and website/blog content – in partnership with relevant communications strategists, channel owners, content creators and issue experts. 
• Manage communications strategists by overseeing critical workstreams, offering strategic guidance, informing priorities, directing and mobilizing communications and marketing staff, and troubleshooting as challenges arise across departments.  
• Lead and oversee the development of integrated communications strategies for key legal, advocacy, policy and narrative priorities across the core issues you oversee with communications strategists. 
• Help identify strategic priorities and plans to help respond to the news of the day and to proactively get ahead of opportunities to advance the organization’s communications goals. 
• Write messaging and core materials for issues, campaigns, new filings and more, leveraging polling, research and other insights to inform key narratives. 
• Establish strong working relationships with legal, advocacy, policy, and development colleagues across the organization, as well as affiliates and partner organizations. Work in coalition within and outside of the ACLU to develop a strong understanding of issues and team dynamics to help inform workflows and communications strategy.  
• Direct rapid response communications — including during off hours — in partnership with relevant communications strategists. Support the Head of Strategic Communications and other department leadership team members in crisis response. 
• In partnership with the Earned Media and Strategic Engagement team, devise and execute a strategy to strengthen and maintain relationship building with key news editors, reporters and broadcast bookers, including providing support for ACLU spokespersons ahead of media engagements. 
• In coordination with department leaders and communication strategists, support the development of and execution of brand awareness, thought leadership and advocacy campaigns associated with key issue areas. 
• Partner with the department’s operations unit and team leads to regularly evaluate and improve department-wide workflows and help make decisions about resourcing needs. 
• Oversee media and communications vendors, consultants, and freelancers within allocated budget for the department to achieve maximum impact.  
• Contribute to department-wide measurement and evaluation efforts regarding the influence and impact achieved by the communications strategies of the ACLU. 
• Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned.

• Demonstrated years of experience with integrated communications strategies, with background in advocacy and legal communications, along with a working knowledge of paid, earned, creator-led, shared and owned media relations tactics, platforms and strategies 
• Strong background in personnel management and demonstrated experience effectively developing and supporting employees with ranging experience levels and backgrounds 
• Management and team-building skills that inspire staff to work collaboratively in pursuit of a common mission and the ability to manage staff on the successful execution of objectives 
• A management style that is accessible, flexible, decisive, and supportive with the ability to provide clear direction and delegate where appropriate 
• Prior experience managing large projects, vendors and staff with the ability to establish priorities that will effectively utilize the staff’s time and the department’s resources 
• The ability to create and implement integrated communications strategies for a large, complex organization 
• Broad experience with legal, political, advocacy and public policy issues, as well as a strong understanding of how communications may be used to promote a legislative agenda, legal strategy and issue advocacy campaign 
• Experience and/or strong interest and understanding of the issues areas this role will oversee, including immigration, human rights, racial justice, and criminal justice. 
• Exceptional writing and editing skills across materials and styles, as well as the ability to effectively edit and review other people’s writing to strengthen overall team skills 
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex and controversial issues and to convey information about the issues to both narrow and broad audiences 
• Media savvy and experience executing communications plans in an evolving media environment, as well as interest in building a communications team that understands how to leverage a range of channels and media verticals 
• Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to operate effectively in a large, multi-office national organization and with state-based affiliates and active volunteers 
• Strong personal diplomacy, including a highly professional temperament and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment
