The role
As a Platform Engineer in our Cloud Foundations team, you will play a crucial role in designing, implementing and maintaining our cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). You'll be responsible for ensuring the scalability, security, and reliability of our cloud environment, enabling Rightmove to deliver innovative solutions efficiently and cost-effectively. This is a team focused on setting standards rather than fighting fires, defining cloud governance, controls and guardrails so developers can deploy confidently on a secure, audited platform. You’ll work closely with database engineers and the security team, shaping cloud foundations and helping developers understand how the platform works; from Kubernetes through to core cloud concepts. The role balances building and evolving the platform with light-touch support, handling rare incidents, and focusing on making the platform more resilient for the future.

This position is a day rate contract role that will last for 3 months, with the possibility of extending to 6 months. Search is a critical workflow for our merchants. Own your territory & build pipeline: Develop and execute a proactive outbound cadence (email, call, social) that generates ≥50 % of your booked opportunities.
Deep discovery & qualification: Uncover pain, business impact, budget, and decision criteria using frameworks like MEDDPICC so you chase only the highest-confidence deals.
Value storytelling & demos: Craft and deliver tailored narratives and live demos that map Elastic’s Search, Observability, and Security capabilities to measurable business outcomes.
Mutual deal strategy & forecast accuracy: Collaborate with customers to build formal close plans and keep your CRM up-to-date, maintaining ≥90 % forecast accuracy within ±10 %.
Executive negotiation & closing: Lead high-stakes contract and pricing discussions—defend your value, structure give/get trades, and land multi-year consumption commitments.

We are looking for a Principal Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) to take extreme ownership of our critical database infrastructure. Working within our Technical Operations team, you will act as the definitive Subject Matter Expert for our highly available MySQL and PostgreSQL estates, operating with a high degree of autonomy to design, build, and optimise our data tier.
This is a high-impact role where you will predominantly lead the database strategy, bridging the gap between traditional database administration and modern Site Reliability Engineering (SRE). You will architect resilient data systems, automate toil through Infrastructure as Code, manage our event-streaming platforms (Kafka), and empower our wider engineering teams with database best practices. If you are excited by the challenge of owning a complex data estate and defining its future state, this is the role for you.
Own the Data Estate: Serve as the primary architect and technical lead for our highly available, distributed MySQL and PostgreSQL environments.
Automate Everything: Transition manual database management into code. Build, maintain, and optimize deployment pipelines for infrastructure using Terraform, Ansible, and Python.
Architect for Scale: Lead capacity planning, disaster recovery design, and high-availability architecture for both bare-metal and containerized data systems.
Manage Event Streaming: Oversee and scale our data streaming and queuing technologies (Kafka, RabbitMQ) to support event-driven microservices.
Drive Performance: Proactively monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize database performance, advising development teams on query tuning, schema design, and technical debt refactoring.

The Foundations team consists of detail-oriented engineers driving innovation and enhancing performance through technical excellence and a focus on results. As the first Software Engineer in the UK, you'll have vast ownership across our stack, making decisions that will have an outsized impact for years to come.
You'll push the boundaries of what a data platform can do by creating novel capabilities that span the platform and optimizing subsystems to achieve order-of-magnitude improvements in performance. You will work on projects such as re-architecting our Elasticsearch cluster, taking response times from seconds to milliseconds; and owning other strategic initiatives that deliver industry-leading platform performance and capabilities.
Our stack is constantly evolving but based on a backend foundation of Python, Django, Celery, Airflow, and Kafka; a frontend built in React, Redux, and Mapbox; data stores including PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch; machine learning models hosted in Bedrock and Sagemaker; and with AWS, Pulumi, Terraform, and Kubernetes as our underlying infrastructure.
Salary Range: £110,000 - £186,000 Annually + Benefits + Equity (if applicable) + Bonus (if applicable)

The role
We are seeking technical polyglots who enjoy both technical architectural design, hands-on coding and peer reviews, though also like the idea of the equally important social/client-facing aspect of the role.

The Principal Software Engineer shapes and evolves our architecture using Distributed Domain Driven Design practices, ultimately ensuring the robustness and scalability of our systems. They influence architectural directions, and through project-embedded consultation. They guide teams to leverage best practices and design patterns.
● Architecture Leadership: Drives the definition and evolution of our architecture using Distributed Domain Driven Design practices. Acts as the strategy leader for key Architecture Quality Attributes (e.g., Availability, Performance, Scalability, Securibility) to inform architecture assessments. Provides project-embedded architecture consultation to promote best Practices, design patterns, and informed buy vs. build decisions.
● Platform Capability Enhancement: Contributes to the prioritization of platform capability improvements across feature and data platforms. Enhances the capture and communication of architecture descriptions through automation and innovative tools. Shepherds platform-wide strategies, including naming, protocol standards, and design patterns, to ensure ongoing value creation.

● Experience with leveraging common infrastructure services like Enterprise Message Bus platforms, configuration services, Toggle management systems, and observability systems like Logging and Distributing Tracing Systems
● Experience with Domain Driven Design concepts and practices such as bounded contexts, event storming, specification by example, etc.
● Experience with design, implementation, and operation of data-intensive, distributed systems
● Ability to design and communicate external and internal architectural perspectives of well-encapsulated systems (e.g. Service Oriented Architecture, Docker-based Services, micro-services) using patterns and tools such as Architecture/Design Patterns and Sequence Diagrams
