The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our time—but it’s also the greatest opportunity for innovation, and a challenge we’re proud to take on. At Overstory, we’re harnessing cutting-edge technology to enable a resilient electrical grid that keeps communities thriving as our world changes.
The grid is the backbone of life as we know it. It powers hospitals, keeps food fresh, and ensures communities stay connected. But extreme weather, aging infrastructure, and growing wildfire risks are putting this critical system under pressure. All of this combined makes the electric utility industry the greatest opportunity for tackling climate change.
One of the leading causes of catastrophic wildfires and power outages? Trees and brush coming into contact with power lines.
That’s where we help. At Overstory, we use AI and advanced satellite imagery to pinpoint and prioritize vegetation risks before they materialize. By giving utilities critical analysis on those risks, we’re helping prevent outages, reduce wildfire risks, and accelerate the transition to a safer, more resilient grid.
Our team spans the Americas and Europe, and we work with utility partners across the Americas and beyond. We’re outdoor enthusiasts, musicians, artists, athletes, parents, and adventurers. What unites us is a passion for solving complex problems, a commitment to climate action, and the belief that technology should be a force for good.
Join us to help us build a more resilient world together.
As a Data Engineering Manager, you will lead across several cross-functional teams, managing up to ~10 data engineers and GIS specialists. You will support teams working on data processing and pipelines to enable ML-powered product capabilities.
Our product teams are cross functional and will typically include product managers, designers, engineers and subject matter experts relating to the team’s domain.
You will be accountable for the technical direction and delivery outcomes of your area. You will challenge your teams to pursue ambitious goals while providing a high level of support — growing engineering talent and fostering a highly collaborative, team-based environment where people can do great work.
Your primary focus will be on building high-performing teams and driving results through others. You will not be expected to spend significant time doing hands-on coding; however, you will be expected to dive deep technically when required and leverage your experience to support strong technical decision-making.
Time zone requirement: Europe (GMT/WET, CET, EET) and Eastern North America (NST, AST, EST)
Note: We believe that all people are capable of great things. We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all of the requirements that are listed within this job description.
We are a group of 100 people from all over the world. Fifteen nationalities are represented in our team and at last count we speak fourteen languages: English, Dutch, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Luxembourgish, Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Estonian, and Danish.
We work remotely from eleven countries and are looking for candidates that are living and working in one of them: United States, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Estonia, Portugal, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Canada. We gather once a year in-person for our unforgettable team gathering event. We also offer the option to occasionally meet up for in-person collaboration.
The climate crisis is a human crisis that requires diverse perspectives to solve.
We place enormous value on diversity and believe that the best ideas emerge when people with different backgrounds and experience work together. We remain committed to scaling a team that reflects the communities we serve, and strive to uphold equitable and inclusive practices across every aspect of our business. We are responsible for creating and maintaining a culture where everyone - regardless of background - has a voice in building a sustainable future.
We act with urgency.
We recognize that change is constant, and we find joy and power in exploration.
Just as ecosystems need biodiversity to thrive, our resiliency comes from our differences.
We love the power of machines but we nurture each other as humans.
We assume the best in everyone, and we share ideas openly so that we have a positive impact.

As the CTO of Overstory, you will lead and scale a world-class engineering team that reduces the risk of wildfires and power outages around the world. This is a rare opportunity for a seasoned engineering leader to help guide a commercially successful climate-tech company through its next stage of growth.
Following our Series B, we’re entering a phase of rapid expansion. You will define a compelling technical strategy and build the team to deliver it. This role requires someone who can zoom in and out seamlessly — rolling up your sleeves to solve complex technical problems while also communicating effectively with the board.
Our product sits at the intersection of AI and remote sensing — fields evolving at light speed. The work is exciting, mission-driven, and core to transforming the electric utility industry and creating a more resilient grid. But it comes with ambiguity. We’re looking for someone energized by the unknown, eager to build products customers love through bold, creative approaches. You must be comfortable balancing the needs of a growing business with building scalable solutions for the future — and be ready to move with urgency on both.
Time zone requirement: Europe (GMT/WET, CET) and Eastern United States (EST)
You’re an entrepreneurial startup leader with a track record of leading engineering teams from Series A through Series C and beyond with a mix of boldness and empathy. You understand the ups and downs that are normal at VC-backed startups. You know how to inspire global teams with an exciting vision while offering them the hands-on support to bring it to life.
You have a strong network to tap, and you are bold in your recruiting. You’re not afraid to hire people who know more than you and to stretch for top talent, and you understand that recruiting is a top priority that requires constant networking and attention. You will build a diverse team that has a high-performing, inclusive, and caring culture.

Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we've built the world's largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar — tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some situations, Proton has literally helped save lives.
We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 700+ team members across 50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it. Check our open-source projects here.
The Role
As VP Design, you will own and lead the design function across both Product Design (user experience, interface, service design) and Brand / Marketing Design (visual identity, campaign creative, brand experience). You’ll partner closely with the CEO, VP Marketing and Heads of Product, helping shape strategy, drive design excellence, and ensure that design becomes a core differentiator for Proton. You will build, mentor and scale a high-performing, multi-disciplinary design organisation, embedding design thinking across the company.
What you will do
• Define and execute the strategic vision for design at Proton, bridging product and brand to deliver a unified and differentiated experience globally.
• Lead, develop and grow a world-class design organisation: recruiting designers and researchers structuring teams across product and brand, setting performance metrics, fostering a culture of creativity, craft and user-centricity.
• Partner with the CEO, VP Marketing and Heads of Product to ensure design is embedded into strategic roadmaps, product launches, marketing campaigns and brand initiatives.
• Oversee the end-to-end design process for all major product lines and brand campaigns: user research, UX/UI, service design, prototyping, testing, visual design, motion, interactive experiences.
• Ensure that the Proton brand identity is strong, consistent, scalable and flexible across all touchpoints: digital, mobile, web, marketing, physical, events.
• Drive design systems, tools and processes across product & brand to deliver efficiency, quality, consistency and scale.
• Advocate for users and privacy-first design principles in everything we build and brand.
• Monitor and measure design impact: user experience metrics, brand perception, conversion, retention, campaign effectiveness; iterate and optimise accordingly.
• Represent design externally: speak on design at conferences, build Proton’s design reputation, collaborate with creative agencies and partners worldwide.
What We’re Looking For
• A minimum of 15 + years of experience in design leadership roles (product, brand and/or marketing) at a global technology company or agency.
• Proven track record of building, scaling and operating design organisations with cross-functional reach.
• Strong experience overseeing both product (UX/UI, service design) and brand/marketing design (visual identity, campaign creative) — not one or the other only.
• Demonstrated ability to define and execute design strategy that drives business impact (growth, engagement, retention, brand equity).
• Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work at executive level and influence across product, marketing, engineering and operations.
• Deep user-centred design mindset; strong portfolio showing end-to-end work (research → strategy → UX → UI → brand visuals).
• Skilled in designing for global audiences, with sensitivity to cultural differences and brand consistency across markets.
• Expertise in building and scaling design systems, establishing best practices and operational processes in fast-growing environments.
• Excellent leadership and people development skills: mentoring senior designers, creating high-performing teams, promoting a culture of craftsmanship and innovation.
• Comfortable working in a dynamic, high-growth company with a mission-driven ethos and a global, diverse team.
• Strong communicator with polished presentation and storytelling skills; fluent in English (other languages a plus).
At Proton, we believe diversity drives innovation and strengthens our mission to provide privacy as a default for all. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals — regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability, or socio-economic background — feel valued and empowered.
