The Role:

This pivotal role drives the design and implementation of high-value features and the foundational Error-Reporting/Backtrace platform. This is a strategic product in the Sauce Labs portfolio, and you will be instrumental in enabling customers to analyze multi-dimensional data and debug at scale to resolve their business-critical production issues. Responsibilities:

MongoDB’s Storage Layer Services (SLS) team is re-architecting the MongoDB cloud storage layer and sits at the heart of our next-generation cloud storage architecture. The Team

This role can sit in our NYC HQ on a hybrid basis, or it can be fully remote while working from a location based in either Eastern or Central time zones. Overview

Compensation for this role

The standard base salary range for this position is $104,000 - $130,000 per year. This position is not eligible for additional commission-based compensation. Salary offers are based on a combination of factors, including, but not limited to, experience, skills, and location.

What We Are Looking For:

We are seeking a Senior VoIP Engineer with a modern engineering mindset to join Bandwidth's Network Operations team. While you possess deep expertise in SIP and carrier-grade environments, you view infrastructure through the lens of Software Reliability Engineering (SRE). This role is critical for ensuring reliable, secure, and automated SIP connectivity across multiple carrier platforms and enterprise environments.

What You'll Do:

• Platform Automation: Design and implement automation to reduce operational burden, replacing manual workflows with scripting and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Voice Orchestration: Use tools like Ansible/AWX and Terraform to automate the provisioning and scaling of voice services and carrier interconnects.
• Open Source & Interoperability: Conduct detailed interoperability testing between carrier platforms and open-source SIP implementations (e.g., Kamailio, OpenSIPS), resolving signaling mismatches and codec issues.
• Carrier Interconnect Strategy: Design and maintain SIP trunking solutions with multiple carriers to ensure reliability, compliance, and optimal routing.
• Advanced Observability: Act as the highest-level escalation point for complex SIP/RTP problems. Use advanced tools like Wireshark, SIPp, and HEPIC/Homer to analyze call flows and media streams.
• System Integration: Collaborate with network and security teams to integrate SIP services through proxy servers and modern routing policies.
• Documentation & Mentorship: Maintain "Documentation as Code," including SIP call flow diagrams and interconnect standards, while providing guidance to junior staff on modern troubleshooting methodologies.

What You Need:

• Experience: 5+ years of hands-on VoIP engineering experience, with a heavy emphasis on carrier-grade SIP environments.
• SIP Mastery: Expert-level knowledge of SIP signaling (INVITE, BYE, etc.), SDP negotiation, and RTP/RTCP.
• Automation Toolkit: 3+ years of proficiency in Python, Bash, or Ansible for automating provisioning and troubleshooting workflows.
• Infrastructure as Code: Experience using IaC tools to manage infrastructure at scale.
• SIP Proxies: Hands-on experience with open-source SIP proxies (e.g., Kamailio, OpenSIPS) alongside traditional SBCs (e.g., Ribbon, Oracle/Acme Packet).
• Linux/OS: Strong Linux administration skills for VoIP application performance and system troubleshooting.
• Diagnostics: Proficiency with diagnostic tools such as Wireshark, sngrep, and Homer/HEP.

Bonus Points:

• Carrier Expertise: Direct experience with carrier-to-carrier SIP interconnects and SS7-to-SIP interworking.
• Routing & Databases: Experience with ENUM, LNP, and complex routing logic.
• Voice Security: Familiarity with TLS, SRTP, and regulatory compliance including STIR/SHAKEN and E911.
• Cloud Infrastructure: Experience deploying voice services in containerized or cloud-native environments.
• Networking: Solid knowledge of IP, DNS, and routing protocols.

This role will be based in our Raleigh, North Carolina HQ, and we work in a hybrid model with 3 days (M, W, F) in the office, with a high in-office culture.

What you will do:

• Verify new and existing features in the Relay App and Relay Dashboard Web interface
• Assist in end-to-end testing with Relay Device and server-side components
• Demonstrated experience authoring test cases and writing acceptance tests for developed features
• Participate in Sprint planning and design sessions
• Work with the project team to understand requirements for new projects
• Ability to perform in-depth analysis, including log examination and querying data
• Ability to prioritize test cases to provide the best test coverage
• Works well cross-functionally in a small, dynamic team
• Effectively analyze, communicate and confirm the resolution of defects
• Document test methodologies, tools, and results

Knowledge, skills, and experience needed:

• Analytical approach to problem-solving
• Understand Agile concepts and QA process (Functional test/regression/Smoke test/etc)
• Familiar with Android Debug Bridge (ADB) and device logging tools
• Proactive communicator - you should be able to communicate effectively with developers and the QA team to understand a feature/defect, and evaluate and communicate testing status 
• Ability to multitask and find the next priority item to work on
• Extremely comfortable using Linux (managing files, grep, cat, bash, vim, etc)
• Ability to develop and debug automated test scripts
• Python or other coding experience a plus
• Hungry to learn and grow
• Associate's degree or higher level of educational attainment required or equivalent experience 
• 1-3 years Testing experience with Android, iOS, Web/Desktop, Networking, or similar

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business challenges and opportunities that can benefit from machine learning solutions. Conduct research and stay updated on the latest advancements in machine learning to recommend and implement appropriate approaches.
• Design, build, and fine-tune machine learning models, algorithms, and statistical analysis to solve complex business problems. Utilize various techniques such as supervised, unsupervised, and deep learning to ensure optimal model performance.
• Prepare and preprocess large-scale datasets to extract relevant features and improve model training efficiency and accuracy. Implement data cleaning, feature engineering, and data augmentation techniques.
• Conduct rigorous evaluation and testing of machine learning models to assess their effectiveness and robustness. Optimize model parameters and hyperparameters to achieve optimal performance and generalization.
• Collaborate with the software engineering team to integrate machine learning models into the production environment. Ensure scalability, reliability, and efficiency of deployed models.
• Establish mechanisms for monitoring the performance of deployed models and identifying potential issues. Proactively maintain and update models as necessary to adapt to changing data and business requirements.
• Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and implement security measures to protect sensitive information.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation of model development, methodologies, and results to facilitate knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, data scientists, and software engineers, to define requirements and support product development with your machine learning expertise.

Experience, qualifications, and skills (what you’ll have):

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field
• Strong theoretical and practical understanding of core Machine Learning and Deep Learning concepts (e.g., architectures, optimization/training, evaluation)
• 1+ years of development experience in Python and a modern machine learning framework such as PyTorch or JAX (including experience in coursework/research / internships)
• Experience using the Linux tool chain
• Understanding of typical web API protocols and transports (e.g., HTTP, Websockets, SSE)
• Experience with managing 24/7 Linux systems, cloud hosting providers (AWS), infrastructure-as-code concepts (Terraform, Ansible, etc), distributed systems, observability tools (OpenSearch, Grafana)
• Desired, but not required, is experience with advanced LLM topics: such as LoRA and quantization, functional programming: such as Erlang and Elixir, systems programming: such as Rust and C++, distributed systems, and key-value databases.

The Relay Hybrid Work Model

At Relay, relationships are at the core of everything we do - and this translates to how we approach our customers and our work internally. Relay strives to be a long-term relational partners versus a transactional vendor to our customers. You will be encouraged to get in front of our customers and/or attend a trade show as a Relayer, regardless of your role.

Our relational approach is also at the heart of why we ask all Relayers in our hybrid model to work from the office a minimum of 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. During your onboarding you should expect to be in the office daily in order to build relationships and your knowledge base as you ramp into the organization!
