The Team

Platform Engineering is the department within SRE that is responsible for a range of critical infrastructure and operational functions that support the broader engineering organization. Among these are our multi-cloud-provider Kubernetes infrastructure, networking, load balancing (including our public-facing edge and internal service mesh), and observability and alerting systems.

The Fleet Management team provides the core runtime environment that empowers our developers to build and ship products to delight our customers. We manage the end-to-end lifecycle of our Kubernetes fleet, alongside the critical components that ensure cluster reliability and security (e.g., CoreDNS, cert-manager, and Gatekeeper). About The Role: 

Urban Sky is seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer to own the design, development, and fielding of advanced electro-optical imaging systems aboard our stratospheric balloon platforms. Our payloads operate in one of the harshest environments on Earth. They must survive temperature extremes, near-vacuum pressures, and high shock loads while delivering precision performance. Staff Platform Engineer, Connectivity

Location: Denver, CO (Hybrid), San Antonio, TX (Hybrid), Brooklyn, NY or Remote (US Based)

About the Role

As the Staff Platform Engineer, Connectivity, you will serve as the technical anchor for major Connectivity projects that enable secure, resilient access between customer OT environments and Simplesense’s cloud-hybrid services. You will define technical strategy across the Connectivity delivery system, architecture patterns, automation workflows, and operational workflows that allow the team to efficiently onboard and support customer environments. In this role, you will partner across engineering development and operations functions to translate product priorities into a cohesive technical plan, align implementation across teams, and raise the engineering bar for quality, standardization, and maintainability.

Work Model: We prioritize candidates in the Denver, CO, San Antonio, TX, and Brooklyn, NY area, but are open to remote talent.

Locals: 2 days/week onsite

Remote: Quarterly travel for team meetings

What Success Looks Like 

30 Days: Become familiar with existing Connectivity architectures,workflows, and patterns; build relationships across Connectivity, Platform, Data Insights, and field/operations stakeholders.
60 Days: Gain a clear understanding of the Connectivity architecture; identify opportunities for standardization and automation; contribute to the technical direction of a Connectivity project initiative.
90 Days: Act as the technical owner for a Connectivity initiative project; drive architectural decisions across engineering teams; mentor Senior and Engineer-level teammates through reviews, planning, and technical guidance.

What You’ll Do

• End-to-End Technical Ownership: Serve as the technical owner for Connectivity projects, responsible for translating product goals into technical strategy, architecture, execution guidance, and long-term maintainability.
• Architecture & Design Leadership: Lead the design of secure, scalable Connectivity architecture patterns spanning facility-edge systems, Linux-based platforms, network appliances, secure channels, validation mechanisms, and operational handoff requirements.
• Delivery System Standardization: Define and evolve the reusable automation patterns, configuration models, validation routines, and implementation standards that allow Connectivity solutions to be delivered repeatedly and with high confidence to customer environments.
• Network Reliability: Shape the network observability and resilience measures to ensure Connectivity services meet performance, uptime, and supportability expectations.
• Technical Leadership: Collaborate across capability teams and functions to align architecture, sequencing, interfaces, and technical tradeoffs; translate cross-functional constraints into execution plans that multiple engineers and teams can follow.
• Security by Design: Embed Zero-Trust security practices into connectivity solutions. Ensure compliance with critical infrastructure security standards.
• Force Multiplier & Mentor: Raise the team’s overall effectiveness through design reviews, code reviews, coaching, standards-setting, and unblocking work across Engineer and Senior Engineer levels.

What You Bring

Required Qualifications:

• Experience: 7+ years of experience building, designing, and operating infrastructure automation solutions in distributed environments.
• Domain Knowledge: Strong experience designing secure, scalable architectures for systems that span Linux platforms, network infrastructure, automation workflows, and operational support requirements.
• Networking Expertise: Strong expertise in networking fundamentals, Linux-based systems, secure connectivity patterns, infrastructure automation, and observability or validation mechanisms.
• Technical Strategy: Proven ability to operate at a Staff level by defining technical direction, navigating ambiguity, and leading cross-functional initiatives from early problem framing through delivery.
• Infrastructure Automation Skills: Proficiency in scripting and automation for infrastructure. Experience using scripting languages (Python, Bash, etc.) to deploy and manage network resources in a repeatable way.
• Leadership: Demonstrated success mentoring engineers, establishing technical standards, improving team execution, and raising engineering quality beyond direct individual output.

Travel: Ability to travel quarterly for Program Management Reviews and team collaboration.

Clearance Requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain a DoD NIPR network account and Common Access Card (CAC) Must have, or be able to obtain, a Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

• Based in Denver, CO, San Antonio, TX, or Brooklyn, NY area
• Experience in DoD, Air Force, or Federal contractor environments
• Certifications such as CCNP/CCIE, AWS Advanced Networking, or similar
• Experience with OT/ICS environments or critical infrastructure systems
• Familiarity with network automation tools (ex. Ansible, Cisco DevNet, open-source routing tools)

Compensation and Benefits

Pay Range: $190k-$260k per year. Compensation is determined based on experience, skill level, and location. We review ranges regularly to ensure market competitiveness.

What You’ll Do

1. Support spacecraft flight test by executing fault detection test campaigns, integrated system communication tests, functional and performance verification tests, and flight software sequencing tests
2. Build an understanding of spacecraft rendezvous, capture, and pose estimation software and assist in its integration into multi-axis hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) spacecraft testbed.
3. Develop and maintain existing software to interface to spacecraft hardware subsystems, utilizing communication standards such as UART, TCP/IP, and CAN.
4. Document custom hardware interface APIs for internal and external users, focusing on hardware functionality and reliability features.
5. Review and contribute to the iteration of other engineers’ code with technical rigor through code reviews and subsystem design reviews.

Your Ideal Background

1. B.S. in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field 
2. 7+ years of software development experience, including embedded or real-time systems 
3. High proficiency in C/C++ for embedded platforms 
4. Proven experience developing software in RTOS and/or embedded Linux environments 
5. Experience with flight software for spacecraft, launch vehicles, or other mission- or safety-critical autonomous systems 
6. Deep understanding of software architecture, interface definition, and system-level integration for complex embedded systems 
7. Familiarity with fault-tolerant system design, redundancy management, and robust error handling 
8. Experience designing and implementing algorithms for visual inspection, object detection, pose estimation, and relative navigation, including robotics or autonomous system computer vision pipelines.

10. Demonstrated ability to technically lead features or subsystems end-to-end, from requirements definition through implementation, testing, and integration

Role Description:

Our technology hinges on flawless execution of rendezvous, proximity operations and docking (RPOD) and stands at the intersection of Space Domain Awareness (SDA), robotics, and in-space upgrades. Complex algorithms are essential to unlocking this vision. This is the domain of GNC Engineers. You’ll primarily focus on the design, build, test, analysis and in orbit operation of the GNC system central to our rendezvous and proximity operations spacecraft and Space Domain Awareness (SDA) products.

Key Responsibilities:

Architecture and Investigation

• Architect solutions necessary to accomplish space mission objectives around space domain awareness and RPOD with an emphasis on autonomy, from both a hardware and software perspective.
• Evaluate and select appropriate techniques to achieve mission such as machine learning methods, physics-informed solutions, stochastic methods, Kalman Filters, etc.
• Assist in proposal capture efforts with feasibility analysis and engage with private/public partners, Department of Defense, Other Government Agencies, and other commercial partnerships.

Architecture Design

• Develop architecture, lead trade studies and lead GNC team from conceptualization to flight for RPOD missions
• Design algorithms, simulations, and tools for orbit determination, state estimation, uncertainty propagation to support SDA efforts
• Analyze and source datasets for training and validation or algorithm performance.
• Build and test modeling and simulation tools for orbital/cislunar dynamics, sensor modeling, and visualization.
• Six degree of freedom modeling, simulation and validation of space craft dynamics, sensors and algorithms, including for RPOD missions.

Implementation

• Collaborate with the software and GNC teams to implement algorithm in flight software.
• Heavily support hardware-in-the-loop testing for integrated system validation.
• Design concepts of operations (CONOPS) that balance thermal, power, momentum and communications for spacecraft missions.
• Provide mission operations training and support.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical engineering discipline
• 5+ years of experience working in guidance, navigation, and control
• Software development experience in Python
• Experience developing, debugging, and deploying GNC sensors, effectors and algorithms that have been used in real world applications/projects
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up atmosphere
• Proven ability to lead a project from conception to completion

Desired:

• Experience with cradle-to-grave spacecraft design, testing, verification/validation and in-orbit mission operations
• Expertise in either guidance, navigation or control
• Experience with multi-body astrodynamics
• Experience with Git, Linux and Basilisk
• Software development experience in C/C++
• Capable of identifying and solving complex problems with little to no supervision or direction

Requirements:

• Must be a US Citizen
• At least 2 years of experience in a similar role
• Industry experience in Cyber Security, particularly network security or application security is required
• Experience with enterprise customer accounts is required 
• Technical networking knowledge in TCP/IP and the application layer
• Technical experience supporting Linux-based products
• Composing SQL queries and working with Databases
• Working with Docker/Kubernetes-based environments is preferred
• Experience with Scripting languages (Bash, Python or equivalent) is preferred
• BS degree in CS or equivalent is preferred

Salary range guidance for this position is: $70,000-$100,000 per year.
