As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer on the Publishing Platform Data team, you will define and drive the modeling architecture that powers personalization, matchmaking, and social experiences across Riot’s player ecosystem. You’ll partner closely with Product, Data Engineering, and Software Engineering to transform large-scale social graph, matchmaking, and behavioral data into adaptive, fair, and player-centric AI systems. Responsibilities:

• Define and lead the modeling architecture for personalization, matchmaking, social graph recommendations, and player/community discovery.

• Develop models for skill inference, player behavior prediction, trust & safety signals, and multi-objective optimization across fairness, latency, and experience quality.

• Drive adoption of advanced modeling approaches including contextual bandits, reinforcement learning, graph ML, and session-aware personalization.
• Partner with Data Engineering and Product to shape data schemas, feature pipelines, telemetry standards, and model observability across the ML lifecycle.
• Define Responsible AI standards and implement fairness audits, bias mitigation, transparency, and safety mechanisms for matchmaking and social systems.
• Lead post-launch evaluations of algorithmic impact on player sentiment, community health, and ecosystem stability.
• Set organization-wide standards for model optimization (latency, throughput, memory), multi-model orchestration, and drift detection.
• Mentor senior ML engineers and data scientists, influencing system design, experimentation strategy, and modeling craft across organizations.
• Represent the ML discipline in cross-functional design reviews, driving alignment on technical decisions, data contracts, and long-term strategy

Required Qualifications:

• 10+ years in ML/Applied AI; 3+ years in principal/staff-level technical leadership.
• Experience with large-scale, real-time ML systems (recommendations, personalization, matchmaking).
• Expertise in graph ML, RL, and representation learning.
• Proficiency in PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, and modern data/serving tools (Ray, Kafka, Flink, Redis).
• Strong grounding in A/B testing, experiment design, and experience metrics.
• Track record of setting ML strategy and standards across teams.

Desired Qualifications:

• Professional background in gaming, player modeling, or social ecosystems.
• Experience with trust & safety, toxicity detection, or community health models.
• Familiarity with Vertex AI, SageMaker, or internal large-scale inference systems.

Media ingestion platform — taking raw uploads all the way through validation, transcoding, staging, and lifecycle-aware storage management.

Data platform — ingesting and indexing multi-modal data, powering retrieval and search, managing context assembly, and maintaining long-term data health.

You instrument and observe distributed systems end to end — not just reading dashboards, but designing for observability from the start

About the Role:

As a Software Engineer on the ML Infrastructure team, you will collaborate closely with the Machine Learning and Product teams to build world-class machine learning inference platforms. These platforms power essential services like personalized recommendations, search, and content understanding across Tubi.

A core responsibility of this team is developing and maintaining low-latency ML model serving systems that support Deep Learning, LLM, and Search models. This involves building self-service infrastructure and critical components such as the inference engine, feature store, vector store, and experimentation engine.

Responsibilities:

• Design and build scalable, high throughput, and low latency distributed systems using Scala

Your Background:

• Experience designing and building scalable, distributed systems in any modern backend language (e.g., Scala, Java, Python, Go, C++); experience with Scala or JVM based language is a plus.
• Strong experience with AWS or an equivalent cloud platform
• Experience building online microservices at scale with low latency serving
• Experience with both SQL (e.g. Postgres) and NoSQL databases (e.g. Cassandra), message brokers (e.g. Kafka), and caches (e.g. Redis)
• Experience with containerization technologies, such as Docker or Kubernetes
• Led the response and resolution efforts for multiple major, large-scale incidents

Bonus:

• Familiarity with the machine learning infrastructure like inference engines (e.g. torschserve, triton, vLLM), vector stores (e.g. LanceDB, FAISS), feature stores (e.g. Feast), ElastiCache, model training orchestration, etc.

The Role:

We are looking for a skilled Lead Full-Stack Engineer (Tech Lead) to join our team. This role is both hands-on and leadership-oriented, requiring the ability to lead technical conversations, contribute to architectural decisions, and guide engineering efforts across the full stack.
