This role can sit in our NYC HQ on a hybrid basis, or it can be fully remote while working from a location based in either Eastern or Central time zones. We are looking for an experienced Senior Engineer for our SRE, Atlas team to support, maintain and grow the Atlas platform. As a senior SRE, you will be expected to be able to design & build complex systems, operate with autonomy and act as owner for everything you do. 

The SRE Atlas team works alongside the various Atlas software engineering teams to provide expertise about running systems at scale, build new tooling and automation and perform essential maintenance of the Atlas fleet. 

This is an SRE team, which means you can expect a highly hands-on approach, tackling the technical challenges of implementing large scale solutions that have the ability to impact our customer’s most crucial workloads.

We are seeking a talented Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) with a strong infrastructure background. This role requires engineers to have a customer-first mindset to ensure that everything we do results in a stronger product and a better experience for all Atlas customers. 

The ideal candidate should

• Have 5+ years of experience running critical systems at scale
• Value efficiency in processes and operations, and display a preference for automation over manual processes (“allergic to ops work”)
• Be familiar with a major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and possess the ability to build and operate systems in a multi-cloud environment
• A strong understanding of how to run a large scale Linux environment, including low level fundamentals 
• Firm grasp of at least one modern programming language, beyond basic scripting (Go, Ruby, Python)

You will be directly responsible for training, evaluation, and deployment of our ML-based scene understanding, behavior prediction, and planning models. Day to day responsibilities include:

• Designing and executing high value experiments based on collaborative input from other machine learning engineers
• Prototyping and implementing continuously improving metrics to evaluate the performance of our behavioral models across many desired scenarios and robotaxi capabilities
• Timely release of major model updates, including analysis of both off-line and on-road evaluation data

What We’re Looking For:

• In-depth understanding of common Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms
• Experience designing, training, and analyzing neural networks for at least one of the following applications: motion planning, object detection, sensor fusion, motion prediction, and/or multi-object tracking
• Strong track record of tackling less well-defined problems, and executing efficiently to deliver the successful outcome
• Advanced knowledge of software engineering principles including software design, source control management, build processes, code reviews, and  testing methods
• Experience with PyTorch or other python-based deep learning frameworks

The Compute team builds the custom engine - BatchAPI - that manages the lifecycle of millions of tasks - built on top of K8s primitives but implements our own custom scheduler.

We deal with the 'unsolved' problems of distributed computing: maximizing hardware utilization while ensuring that a failure in one node doesn't cascade across the entire cluster. This engine is engineered to handle massive scale, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and rapid turnaround for our engineers.

Furthermore, the Compute team empowers engineers across the company to effectively harness this compute power. They develop and maintain the Batch Workflows Python SDK. This framework provides an intuitive, high-level interface that allows engineers to programmatically define, construct, deploy, monitor, and manage their complex computational workloads. The SDK abstracts away the complexities of the underlying infrastructure, enabling engineers to focus purely on the logic and goals of their data processing, simulation, or training tasks, thus accelerating the entire development cycle for the Aurora Driver.

In this role you will

• Design, implement, and maintain core components of the high-performance, large-scale distributed batch compute engine (BatchAPI). Architect and optimize the scheduler, resource allocator, and execution engine of BatchAPI to handle bursty, heterogeneous workloads with minimal overhead.
• Design low-latency APIs and resilient communication protocols that bridge our Python SDK with the Golang-based core engine.
• Develop high-level workflow abstractions, enabling engineers across the company to programmatically define, deploy, and manage complex data processing, simulation, and ML training pipelines.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in Python for automation/framework development

Aurora’s Product Security team’s mission is to discover, mitigate, and prevent security risks in the software, hardware, and services developed by Aurora.

Our team is responsible for ensuring the secure design and implementation of secure technologies used by the Aurora Driver as well as continually improving the assurance levels of security across all of Aurora’s Products.  This team is also responsible for developing, contributing and documenting security engineering processes and the resulting product security requirements used by the company. Additionally team members support and perform technical security assessments, threat modeling, security code reviews and vulnerability testing to highlight and document risks.
