MongoDB’s Storage Layer Services (SLS) team is re-architecting the MongoDB cloud storage layer and sits at the heart of our next-generation cloud storage architecture. This relatively new team is building performant, multi-tenant distributed storage services that both enhance today’s Atlas storage stack and enable more customer workloads to run more efficiently.

You will partner with the teams building these storage services to define SLOs, shape capacity plans, and ensure the reliability, durability, and operational safety of the storage layer that underpins Atlas. The Team

This role can sit in our NYC HQ on a hybrid basis, or it can be fully remote while working from a location based in either Eastern or Central time zones. Responsibilities

• Develop and optimize firmware for BLDC motor control, including advanced control algorithms and system identification.
• Design, debug, and integrate low-level communication protocols such as RS-485, CAN, UART, and SPI.
• Implement and maintain real-time systems using RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS, RT Linux, VxWorks).
• Collaborate with hardware engineers to design and validate motor driver circuits and power electronics systems.
• Integrate firmware into higher-level communication frameworks, such as DDS (Distributed Data Service), e.g., ROS.
• Test, validate, and debug firmware systems in the lab.
• Document firmware design processes and contribute to best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or Mechatronics.
• Hands-on experience in firmware development for robotics, motor control, or embedded systems.
• Expertise in BLDC motor control, including FOC (Field-Oriented Control), PWM, and current/position control techniques.
• Proficiency in low-level communication protocols such as RS-485, CAN, and SPI.
• Experience with real-time embedded systems (e.g., FreeRTOS, RT Linux).
• Familiarity with DDS frameworks (e.g., ROS).

Position Overview

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to enhance the performance, reliability, and maintainability of our cutting-edge robotics systems in deployment. You will design, implement, and maintain software systems for deployment in real-world robotic products. This role involves leading discussions and collaborating with machine learning, deployment, test, and security engineers to ensure seamless integration of our machine learning models into practical applications. You will also define technical roadmaps and drive product and system architecture direction.

Responsibilities

• Architect, build, and maintain deployment software infrastructure and back-end services (e.g., model training infrastructure, AI developer tools, metrics dashboards).
• Lead teams to develop reliable software systems with robust testing, metrics, and logging mechanisms.
• Write and review code, develop documentation, create capacity plans, and debug on robot hardware.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical roadmaps and drive the direction of product and system architecture.
• Share an on-call rotation with the engineering team to ensure system reliability and quick issue resolution.

Preferred Qualifications

• BS, MS or higher degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Minimum of 3 years of industry experience.
• Proficiency developing higher-level languages (e.g. Python, C++, or Java).
• Experience in configuration and maintenance of applications such as web servers, load balancers, relational databases, storage systems, and messaging systems.
• Knowledge of Linux OS fundamentals, memory management, and kernel.
• Experience learning software, frameworks, and APIs.
• Experience with enterprise security.
• Previous extensive work experience as a: Systems Engineer, Software Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Network Engineer, Systems Administrator, Linux Administrator, Database Administrator, Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), or similar.
