We are looking for an experienced Director of Engineering to lead the development, operation, and evolution of large-scale managed database services within a cloud infrastructure environment. This leadership role is responsible for driving engineering strategy, ensuring service reliability, scalability, security, and operational excellence, while building high-performing engineering teams that deliver customer-facing products with speed and quality.
The ideal candidate combines deep expertise in cloud platforms, distributed systems, and relational databases with proven leadership experience managing engineering organizations. You will define technical direction, strengthen operational processes, partner with cross-functional teams, and create a culture of ownership, innovation, and customer-centric execution.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering teams responsible for designing, building, and operating managed database services for cloud-based platforms.
- Define and execute engineering strategies focused on scalability, availability, security, durability, and operational excellence.
- Drive architecture decisions for database infrastructure, control planes, automation systems, deployment workflows, and operational tooling.
- Establish and monitor service reliability objectives, including availability, backup and recovery, replication health, incident response, and performance metrics.
- Build highly automated systems for deployment, monitoring, fleet management, scaling, and infrastructure maintenance.
- Guide engineering decisions across database replication, failover, storage growth, backup and restore, upgrades, security, and observability.
- Lead incident management processes, capacity planning, change management, and operational risk mitigation.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Infrastructure, SRE, Security, Support, and other cross-functional teams to align engineering priorities with customer needs.
- Drive roadmap execution while maintaining high engineering quality and predictable delivery timelines.
- Build, mentor, and retain high-performing engineering leaders and technical teams through coaching and career development.
- Promote engineering best practices, operational discipline, technical excellence, and continuous improvement across the organization.
- Communicate technical strategy, project progress, risks, and architectural trade-offs effectively to executive leadership and stakeholders.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, including leadership of large-scale cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, or platform engineering teams.
- 4+ years of experience managing engineering managers or senior technical leaders.
- Strong experience building and operating customer-facing cloud services at scale.
- Deep understanding of relational database technologies, high-availability architectures, replication, backup and recovery, and database performance optimization.
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, automation, and scalable platform design.
- Experience establishing Service Level Objectives (SLOs), operational metrics, and engineering governance.
- Proven expertise in incident management, deployment strategies, capacity planning, monitoring, and operational excellence.
- Demonstrated success in leading engineering organizations, driving technical strategy, and delivering high-quality products.
- Excellent communication, leadership, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing production environments involving PostgreSQL, MySQL, or other enterprise-grade relational databases.
- Familiarity with managed database platforms, cloud-native infrastructure, and large-scale database services.
- Experience with containerization, orchestration, automation, and infrastructure management technologies.
- Knowledge of cloud-native architectures, distributed storage systems, and high-availability engineering practices.
- Experience building operational tooling, self-healing systems, or infrastructure automation frameworks.
- Strong background in mentoring engineering leaders and fostering high-performing technical organizations.
