Senior Machine Learning Engineer

Senior Machine Learning Engineers at Thoughtworks build, maintain and test the architecture and infrastructure for managing machine learning applications. They are involved in supporting and contributing to the design of the end-to-end applications and products. They are responsible for building core capabilities including technical and functional machine learning systems and applications, being the anchor for functional streams of work and are accountable for timely delivery.
As a senior machine learning engineer, you will work on the latest tools, frameworks and offerings while also being involved in enabling credible and collaborative problem solving to execute on a strategy.
Job responsibilities
- You will contribute to design and drive the development of robust scalable architectures and infrastructure for deploying and managing machine learning (ML) applications, ensuring high availability, performance and security.
- You will collaborate with data scientists and engineers to translate business needs into effective and efficient ML systems and applications.
- You will own the development and maintenance of core functionalities within ML applications, including ML pipelines, model training and deployment, and monitoring and evaluation.
- You will drive the functional stream of work by providing technical expertise, handling team discussions and ensuring timely delivery of assigned tasks.
- You will stay ahead of the curve by actively exploring and implementing the latest tools, frameworks and offerings in the ML landscape.
- You will facilitate collaborative problem solving within the team by actively listening, communicating effectively and mentoring other engineers.

Job qualifications
Technical Skills
- An advanced English level is required.
- You must have a strong experience with LLM and AI.
- You have experience in writing clean, maintainable and testable code, demonstrating attention to refactoring and readability of the code.
- You are proficient in scripting languages such as Python or Shell for automation and task streamlining.
- You have knowledge of distributed systems and scalable architectures to handle large-scale ML applications.
- You have experience with building, deploying, and maintaining ML systems using relevant ML techniques and platforms, i.e.: Scikit-learn, Tensorflow, MLFlow, Kubeflow, Pytorch.
- You have experience with building, deploying and maintaining ML systems and experience with application of MLOps principles and CI/CD to ML.
- You have experience in machine learning engineering and data science, are familiar with key ML concepts, algorithms and frameworks, and understand ML model lifecycles.
- You have experience with designing and operating the infrastructure required to run different types of ML training and serving workloads, i.e.: on-premise vs. cloud infrastructure, infrastructure as code, monitoring, etc.
- You have hands-on experience with on-premise and cloud services for building and deploying ML pipelines, i.e.: Azure, AWS, GCP or Databricks and associated ML managed services.

As part of this team, you'll support the delivery of pre-award, post-award, rescue, and stand-alone-feasibility projects. The Senior Feasibility Associate supports pre-award feasibility projects and support business development and operational strategy teams by conducting global feasibility analyses. The Senior Feasibility Associate supports feasibility projects for newly awarded and/or ongoing clinical trials and supports start-up and clinical teams with site identification. Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to:
- Support pre-award feasibility projects
- Provide pre-award feasibility analysis and input for pre-award RFPs, including competitive analysis, historical recruitment analysis, standards of care, drug analysis, epidemiology analysis, site and country analysis.
- Review clinical protocols, study assumptions, client information and study plans for US and global trials.
- Present and explain feasibility analysis to BD/Clients, including the process, recommendations, and rationale.
- Interface with colleagues, consultants and partners and collaborate with internal and external sources to gather and share feasibility information.
- Undertake feasibility site outreach for pre award opportunities.
- Participate and/or contribute to BDM and client calls.

In this role, you’ll lead the development and optimization of clinical data systems, drive data standardization, build validation frameworks, and design high‑performance databases and pipelines across global trials.
The Senior Clinical Data Engineer leads the strategic development and optimization of clinical data systems to support regulatory compliance, advanced analytics, and operational excellence across global trials.
This role drives enterprise-level data standardization initiatives, and architects scalable validation frameworks to proactively address systemic data issues. With deep expertise in Python, R, SQL, and SAS, the engineer builds and maintains modular codebases, sets coding standards, and mentors junior engineers. The role also oversees regulatory alignment with GCP and FDA 21 CFR Part 11, establishing robust documentation and audit trail protocols. Through dynamic dashboards and analytics tools, the engineer delivers actionable insights into trial performance and data quality. As a strategic liaison across Biostatistics, Clinical Operations, and Regulatory Affairs, the engineer translates clinical requirements into scalable technical solutions and leads the design of secure, high-performance databases and ETL pipelines integrating data from diverse clinical systems.

Reporting & Visualization - Develop and operationalize dynamic dashboards and analytics tools that provide real-time insights into data quality, trial progress, and operational KPIs. Translate complex datasets into actionable intelligence for clinical and regulatory stakeholders.
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support: Act as a strategic liaison between Clinical Data Engineering and Biostatistics, Clinical Operations, and Regulatory Affairs. Translate clinical and scientific requirements into scalable technical solutions that support study execution and data delivery.
Database Design & Optimization: Lead the design and optimization of secure, high-performance relational databases and data lakes. Ensure infrastructure scalability, query efficiency, and data governance for large-scale clinical datasets.
Qualifications:
Minimum Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (life sciences, statistics, data management, clinical operations) or relevant/equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

Responsibilities
- Designing and implementing server-side applications using Python
- Writing complex SQL queries using Trino to gather analytics data from multiple sources
- Developing and maintaining microservices for our platform
- Designing and optimizing databases, both relational and non-relational
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate APIs and ensure smooth functionality
- Writing efficient and reusable code, adhering to best practices and coding standards
- Performing code reviews to ensure high-quality codebase
- Developing comprehensive end-to-end integration tests to ensure systems function as intended
- Troubleshooting and debugging issues in backend systems
- Staying up to date with the latest technologies and industry trends to drive continuous improvement
Qualifications
- English language proficiency required
- BS degree in Computer Science or a similar technical area of study, or equivalent practical experience
- 2-4 years of experience as a software engineer/developer, with a focus on backend development
- Proficiency in Python
- Strong experience with databases, SQL, and database optimization techniques
- Experience working with microservices architecture
- Familiarity with API design principles and RESTful services
- Solid understanding of software development lifecycle and Agile methodologies
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Strong collaboration and communication abilities, with the capability to work in cross-functional teams
Nice to Have
- Advanced degree in Computer Science or related field
