We are seeking an R&D Metrology Engineer to join our dynamic materials development labs. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, hands-on, and a resourceful problem solver with a strong understanding of materials characterization equipment and methods. In this role, you will work closely with ALD and Epi process engineers to develop and optimize next-generation materials for advanced node semiconductor processing.
This position requires working the early morning shift (1st shift), including weekend coverage, to ensure optimal utilization and uptime of metrology equipment in a fast-paced R&D environment

Role overview
As a Senior Process Engineer at ASM, you will work with semiconductor processing and analytical equipment to research, develop and optimize processes focused on oxidation, annealing, curing, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD, PEALD), Epitaxy or PECVD for logic, memory, analog, power, and MEMS applications. You will design and conduct complex experiments, measurements and perform the interpretation of complex experimental output. While you deliver creative and inventive solutions, technical publications, and generation of Intellectual Property (IP) are an essential function of this position.
Note: This role is intended for candidates who are graduating in Spring 2026 or have graduated within the past two years and have 0–2 years of professional work experience.

Job Summary:
At LG Energy Solution Arizona, Inc., the Sr. Engineer – Analysis, Quality Assurance leads complex failure investigations to identify the root causes of safety and reliability issues related to lithium-ion battery cells. Operating within an advanced laboratory and analytical environment, this role drives in-depth analysis of internal, external, and field-returned samples to determine failure mechanisms and systemic risks across supplier, production, and finished product stages. The Senior Engineer develops detailed technical reports, leads cross-functional investigations, and provides technical leadership for failure analysis activities and investigation strategy. Through these efforts, the role guides engineering and quality teams in implementing effective corrective and preventive actions that strengthen product safety and reliability.
Responsibilities:
• Lead structural and design safety risk analysis of lithium-ion battery cell systems using advanced analytical methods and precision analysis equipment.
• Lead complex battery failure investigations by analyzing internal samples, field-returned products, and adjacent cell conditions to identify root causes and failure mechanisms.
• Design and lead reproducibility experiments to validate suspected failure mechanisms and confirm systemic root causes of field quality issues.
• Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in failure analysis, mentoring engineers and guiding operators on standardized analysis methods and proper use of laboratory equipment.
• Develop and maintain a failure occurrence knowledge library documenting key failure phenomena identified through field quality investigations and reproducibility testing.
• Perform advanced data analysis and present investigation findings, root causes, and recommended corrective actions to engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Drive cross-functional investigations with Engineering, Quality, Customer Service/Warranty teams, suppliers, and global headquarters to resolve complex product issues and strengthen product reliability.
• Maintain laboratory organization and compliance with 5S3R standards (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain; Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container) to ensure a safe and efficient analysis environment.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field; equivalent diploma with relevant experience may be considered.
• 7+ years of experience in quality engineering, failure analysis, or reproducibility testing within an automotive or manufacturing environment.
• Extensive experience conducting complex failure investigations of lithium-ion battery components, including fire-related or safety-critical events.
• Advanced experience using failure analysis and non-destructive testing equipment, including 3D CT systems, SEM/EDX, ion milling, mechanical polishing, or optical microscopy.
• Experience operating battery charge and discharge system equipment for product testing and failure investigation.
• Experience in metrology, measurement systems programs, and calibration processes preferred.
• Demonstrated problem-solving capability, with Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent methodology experience preferred.
• Ability to work flexible hours as needed to support global collaboration and investigation activities.
Skills:
• Knowledge of IATF and ISO standards.
• Experience using Minitab, Six Sigma methodologies, and 8D problem-solving approaches.
• Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
• Ability to provide technical guidance on failure analysis methods and investigation approaches.
• Strong critical thinking abilities and analytical problem-solving skills.
