Commercial Construction Project Engineer

Position Summary
We are hiring a Commercial Construction Project Engineer to support the planning, coordination, and execution of commercial and institutional construction projects. In this role, you will work alongside project managers, field teams, subcontractors, and office staff to help keep projects organized, on schedule, and within budget.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with commercial construction experience who is looking to grow into a larger project management role.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate project documentation, including RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, quality records, safety documents, financial reports, and closeout packages.
Review project progress and help identify schedule, cost, or production issues.
Process shop drawings, submittals, and construction documents.
Assist with estimating by performing quantity takeoffs using digitizers, paper plans, and 3D modeling software.
Track project changes, collect pricing, prepare estimates, and process change orders.
Develop and update project schedules using construction scheduling software.
Support field layout by reviewing drawings, coordinating dimensions, preparing control line drawings, and assisting with CADD tasks.
Assist with subcontract administration, purchase orders, and project contracts.
Prepare reports using Project Center, USACE QCS/RMS, Prolog, and other construction management software.
Work with project teams to resolve field issues and maintain project progress.
Help ensure compliance with project specifications, contract requirements, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
Coordinate with Accounting, Human Resources, Information Services, and other internal departments.
Support project closeout activities and final documentation.
Participate in constructability reviews and value engineering discussions.
Attend project meetings, company meetings, and training opportunities.
Travel to project sites throughout the assigned region as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management with 2–3 years of experience working for a commercial or industrial general contractor, or
At least 5 years of related commercial construction experience in place of a degree.
Experience supporting both subcontracted work and self-performed construction.
Knowledge of commercial, institutional, renovation, and site construction methods.
Experience with estimating, scheduling, project tracking, and construction documentation.
Proficiency with spreadsheets, email, and construction management software.
Basic knowledge of civil, architectural, mechanical, or electrical construction disciplines.
Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work effectively with project managers, subcontractors, field personnel, and office teams.
Willingness to travel to multiple project sites.
Preferred Certifications
The following certifications are preferred. Qualified candidates may have up to six months to obtain them if needed.
- OSHA 30
- First Aid
- CPR
- USACE/NAVFAC CQC Certification
- Engineer in Training (EIT) or Associate Constructor (AC)
Physical Requirements
Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Walk active construction sites for extended periods.
Climb ladders and stairs throughout the workday.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record for travel between project locations and occasional material pickups.
Preferred Experience
Coordinating construction projects from planning through closeout.
Experience with Design-Build, IDIQ, Lump Sum, and Fast Track project delivery methods.
Supporting projects valued up to approximately $4 million or contributing to larger commercial construction projects.
Managing multiple priorities while maintaining a strong focus on quality, safety, and project success.
