Purpose of Role 

The purpose of the School Cleaner Role is to ensure that the school premises are maintained to a consistently high standard of cleanliness, hygiene, safety, and presentation. The role is responsible for cleaning and maintaining classrooms, offices, common areas, restrooms, and other designated spaces to provide a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, parents, and visitors. The School Cleaner contributes to the effective operation of the school by following established cleaning procedures, health and safety standards, and safeguarding expectations. The role requires attention to detail, reliability, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of hygiene and cleanliness throughout the school environment.

Key Responsibilities 

• Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, corridors, stairways, common areas, restrooms, and other designated school facilities. 

• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, disinfect, and clean surfaces and fixtures as required. 

• Ensure restrooms are cleaned, sanitized, and adequately stocked with soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and other necessary supplies. 

• Empty waste bins and dispose of rubbish in accordance with school procedures and applicable health and safety requirements. 

• Clean windows, doors, furniture, fixtures, and other surfaces as required. 

• Respond promptly to spills, accidents, or other situations requiring immediate cleaning or attention. 

• Maintain cleaning equipment and ensure it is used, stored, and handled appropriately. 

• Use cleaning products and chemicals safely and in accordance with manufacturer instructions and school procedures. 

• Report damaged equipment, maintenance issues, hazards, leaks, or other concerns to the appropriate person. 

• Assist in preparing facilities for school events, activities, meetings, and other special occasions when required. 

• Support the maintenance of a clean and orderly environment in outdoor and indoor areas assigned. 

• Follow established schedules, cleaning routines, and instructions provided by the line manager. 

• Respect the privacy and confidentiality of students, staff, and families when working in classrooms, offices, and other areas of the school. 

• Follow all school policies and procedures relating to health and safety, safeguarding, security, and professional conduct. 

• Take appropriate precautions when working in areas occupied by students and staff. 

• Report any safeguarding concerns, accidents, incidents, or unusual situations to the appropriate member of staff in accordance with school procedures. 

• Work cooperatively with other members of the Facilities and Operations team. 

• Perform other reasonable duties related to the role as required by the line manager.

Qualifications: 

• Basic education or equivalent qualifications. 

• Basic knowledge of workplace health and safety practices. 

Experience:  

• Previous experience in cleaning, housekeeping, janitorial services, facilities support, or a similar role (typically 1–2 years minimum). 

• Experience using cleaning equipment and products safely and effectively. 

• Experience following cleaning schedules, procedures, and health and safety requirements. 

• Experience working independently and managing routine tasks with minimal supervision.
