• Salary Academic Level A ($83,985 - $113,917 p.a.) or Level B ($119,915 - $142,402 p.a.) + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements
• Primarily based at Melbourne City campus, and the potential to work across other RMIT campuses as required

About the Role
Join RMIT’s School of Engineering and contribute to an industry-connected CRC-P project focused on advancing AI-powered automation for the repurposing of second-life electric vehicle batteries. As a Research Fellow (Level A), you will undertake high-quality research and development activities that support RMIT’s research strategy and help address a growing sustainability challenge in the energy and mobility sectors.

Working independently and collaboratively, you will apply your expertise in robotics, machine learning, battery systems or a related discipline to deliver project outcomes, build productive research partnerships and contribute to high-quality outputs. You will have the opportunity to work with research teams, industry partners and internal stakeholders to develop practical, scalable solutions with real-world impact, while strengthening research networks across RMIT and beyond.

To be successful in this position, you’ll bring research experience and capability appropriate to the level of appointment.

For Academic Level A appointment, you will demonstrate:

• Emerging research experience relevant to the project, including robotic systems, battery systems, machine learning, AI-powered automation and/or related fields.
• Ability to clearly communicate research concepts, technical knowledge and project outcomes to academic, industry and project stakeholders.
• Initiative in research, analysis and problem solving, including the ability to contribute to practical research solutions.
• Evidence of research engagement appropriate to career stage, such as doctoral research, emerging publications, conference presentations or project contributions.
• Experience, or the capacity to develop experience, in laboratory-based or hardware-based testing, validation or prototyping of simulation, robotic, AI or battery-related systems.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a research team to meet agreed project outcomes, timelines and milestones.

For Academic Level B appointment, you will demonstrate:

• Strong research experience relevant to the project, including robotic systems, battery systems, machine learning, AI-powered automation and/or related fields, with evidence of independent research contribution.
• Ability to clearly communicate complex research concepts, technical knowledge and project outcomes to academic, industry and project stakeholders.
• Demonstrated initiative in research leadership, analysis and problem solving, including the ability to develop and deliver practical research solutions.
• A record of research engagement and outputs appropriate to Level B, including publications, collaborations, project contributions and evidence of research impact.
• Experience in laboratory-based or hardware-based testing, validation or prototyping, including the testing of developed simulation, robotic, AI or battery-related systems.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a research team to meet agreed project outcomes, timelines and milestones.

Qualifications:

• Mandatory for Academic Level A appointment: PhD or close to submission in robotics, machine learning or other relevant disciplines.
• Mandatory for Academic Level B appointment: PhD in robotics, machine learning or other relevant disciplines.
