Job Summary

The Coordinator, Music Technology coordinates the day-to-day music technology resources, equipment, and operations within the Bower School of Music. The position participates in the development and implementation of music technology programs and is responsible for the recording, livestreaming, and archiving of performances, concerts, and other School of Music events.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinates and manages the operations and functionality of the recital and rehearsal halls recording sessions and equipment.
  • Coordinates the music technology needs of School of Music faculty in classes, choir, orchestra, band, and/or opera.
  • Provides music technology resources for performances and auditions as required.
  • Assists with the development of introductory level music technology courses.
  • Monitors and complies with all fiscal expenditures and guidelines in accordance with university policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates, trains, and schedules part-time OPS staff for the music instruction lab and concert or recital hall recordings, including back-of-house management.
  • Serves as instructor of record in fall and spring semesters for MUS 1360 Introduction to Music Technology (one credit), teaching up to one credit per semester.
  • Participates in the planning and development of music technology, resources and curriculum as appropriate to department needs.
  • Records audio, video, and streaming of performances including: music pre and post-production of student recitals, music ensemble performances, Nisita Series concerts, faculty recitals, and/or student auditions or competitions.
  • Collaborates with videographer to coordinate video and audio recording processes, including: file editing, preparing “timing” files, and the "good" audio files for professional streaming.

Other Duties:

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Assists with and coordinates live performances across campus.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Professional full-time experience in studio production or digital audio techniques.
  • Experience operating personal computers with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) software.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited institution in Music Technology, or closely related field.
  • Work experience in higher education music program.
  • Demonstrated experience with current trends and technologies, including music software and recording programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challenges with creativity
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, and holding oneself accountable
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively across teams
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of recording and post-production techniques, electronic music synthesis, musical acoustics, digital and analog electronics, and electronics and recording technology.
  • Knowledge of trends on applications of music technology in higher education.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to operate basic theatrical lighting and lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of music technology applications considered as best practice for applied music instruction and for classroom environments.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to consult with faculty and students on best practice in music technology as it relates to music composition, orchestration, and arranging in higher education.
  • Ability to evaluate current uses of music technology in degree-specific programs, including recommendations that lead to program enhancement.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively within the community and willing to contribute to a team effort.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to think critically and make clear, well-reasoned and timely decisions.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.
