Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Vice President, Cash Equity Trader to join our Toronto-based trading team. The successful candidate will play a key role in executing institutional equity orders, providing liquidity solutions to clients, managing trading risk, and collaborating closely with Sales Trading, Research, ECM, Program Trading, and Capital Markets teams.

This is a client-facing role requiring strong market knowledge, exceptional execution skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume trading environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute institutional client orders across Canadian and cross-border equities with a focus on best execution, minimizing market impact, and maximizing performance against benchmarks.
• Commit and manage firm capital on risk transactions within approved limits, actively monitoring intraday and overnight exposure.
• Provide liquidity, pricing, and market colour to institutional clients, partnering with Sales Trading to strengthen relationships and grow wallet share.
• Manage positions and trading risk in real time, including hedging, inventory management, and P&L attribution.
• Support ECM transactions, including bought deals, marketed offerings, block trades, and secondary distributions.
• Coordinate with Program Trading and Electronic Trading to deliver the full suite of execution capabilities, including algorithmic and portfolio-based solutions.
• Contribute market intelligence, flow observations, and trade ideas that leverage the firm's Research platform and sector expertise.
• Maintain rigorous compliance with CIRO, Canadian securities regulations, and internal trading, conduct, and risk policies.
• Identify opportunities to improve execution quality, workflow efficiency, and use of trading technology.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5–8 years of institutional cash equity trading experience at a broker-dealer or investment bank.
• Demonstrated ability to commit and manage capital, with a strong track record of risk-adjusted performance.
• Deep knowledge of Canadian and North American market structure, venues, and liquidity dynamics.
• CIRO-registered as a Trader (or eligible to register), with completion of the Canadian Securities Course, Conduct and Practices Handbook, and Trader Training Course.
• Proficiency with order and execution management systems, algorithmic trading tools, and market data platforms such as Bloomberg.
• Strong client-facing communication skills and the ability to build credibility with institutional portfolio managers and buy-side traders.
• Sound judgment under pressure, high attention to detail, and a disciplined approach to risk.
• Undergraduate degree required; CFA designation or progress toward it is an asset.

Please note the base salary for this role is $160,000 CAD.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
