What you'll be doing

As a Senior Country Risk Economist you will support the assessment and management of country risk across a large portfolio of countries. Your responsibilities will include preparing country risk assessments, country rating recommendations, outlooks, briefing notes and presentations for internal stakeholders and risk committees. You will also contribute to the development, maintenance and testing of country risk rating models, conduct scenario analysis and stress testing around macroeconomic, financial and geopolitical shocks, and contribute to thematic research on emerging sovereign, geopolitical and structural risks relevant to the bank’s portfolio. Creativity, innovation and lateral thinking are very important aspects of the job as rapid globalization challenges conventional economic models.

How you'll succeed

• Country risk assessment – Conduct qualitative and quantitative research to identify and assess key developments impacting the risk profiles of a large portfolio of countries globally. Summarize your findings by distilling large amounts of complex information into concise country rating reports. Derive country risk ratings by overlaying expert judgment and peer analysis onto the objective inputs in populating the country rating model.
• Present to Country Risk Rating Committee – Contribute to the preparation of meeting materials and present country assessments and rating recommendations to a committee of senior internal stakeholders. Anticipate questions and prepare to debate rating recommendations.
• Monitor country-specific and geopolitical developments - Monitor macroeconomic, financial, political, institutional, social, environmental and geopolitical developments, and identify and report emerging vulnerabilities and changes in the risk outlook.
• Stress testing – Participate in the bank’s established stress testing procedures by contributing to the development of macroeconomic, financial and geopolitical shock scenarios. Prepare regular updates of developments in key conflict zones or geopolitical “hot spots”.
• Process country limit amendments – Prepare interim country limit amendment recommendations incorporating clear summaries of complex capital markets transactions supported by updated country risk assessments.
• Ad hoc - Contribute to thematic research on emerging sovereign, geopolitical and structural risks relevant to the bank’s portfolio. Participate in regular policy reviews and updates and rating model changes.

Who you are

• You can demonstrate experience. You have extensive experience researching and analyzing geopolitical developments, governance, macroeconomic trends, sovereign balance sheets, and external sector dynamics.
• You can communicate complex ideas clearly. You have strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely convey and defend complex concepts and tailor recommendations for senior executives and committees.
• You understand capital markets products and credit. You have a well-developed understanding of capital markets products and counterparty credit risk principles, and strong judgment in evaluating complex transactions.
• You’re an influential partner. You build strong relationships with stakeholders and you communicate with confidence in situations that require credibility, challenge, and collaboration.
• You are certified. You have a graduate degree in international economics or related discipline and/or at least 5 years of related work experience.
• You bring enthusiasm to work everyday. Learning excites you, curiosity drives you, and you have an insatiable need to understand how the world works.
