We are looking for a Verification and Validation (V&V) System Engineer with a strong technical background in system-level testing, structured test development, and validation of autonomous vehicle behaviors. This role is critical in ensuring Kodiak’s self-driving vehicles behave as expected in both simulation and on-road environments. The ideal candidate thrives working across software, hardware, operations, and safety teams to develop scalable test coverage to support software releases and safety assurance processes. 

This person will be based in the Detroit, MI area. 

In this role, you will:

• Define and implement verification and validation methods across multiple test environments, including simulation, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and in-vehicle testing. A major focus will be on structured vehicle-level scenario testing at a test track facility.
• Develop structured test plans and procedures to evaluate system performance and safety for core autonomy features for software releases and key milestones.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to scope and execute new tests aligned with feature requirements.
• Develop and refine test workflows to improve efficiency and coverage of critical requirements using a combination of simulation, analysis, and on-road validation.
• Expand the test suite to address edge cases, a wide range of operational conditions, and existing coverage gaps. 
• Analyze test results to identify unexpected behaviors and failures, support root cause triage, and drive resolution.
• Build tools to automate test execution, data extraction, and results reporting, with a focus on repeatability and efficiency.
• Support software release readiness through structured test completion, tracking, failure resolution, and final test documentation and reporting.

What you’ll bring:

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, MechE/EE, System Engineering, Computer Science or a related STEM field. 
• Strong experience in verification and validation, systems integration, and/or autonomy testing for complex systems, preferably for autonomous vehicles. 
• Willingness and ability to travel to test/customer sites up to ~25% of the time, depending on needs for key milestones and sprints. 
• Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work cross functionally, prioritize multiple projects, and deliver results in a fast paced development environment. 
• Strong hands-on testing experience at a test facility.
• Bonus:  Proficiency in Python or C++; experience with developing test metrics and KPIs. Ability to query large databases (e.g. ElasticSearch); experience with requirements and test management tools such as JAMA or similar; experienced in the Systems Engineering V-Model and its application to V&V workflows; knowledge of safety critical development standards (e.g. ISO 26262) and familiarity with SOTIF and UL4600.

Overview

At Rithum the Database Reliability Engineering (DBRE) team is responsible for the availability, reliability, and observability of all database systems. We rely heavily on automation to reduce manual work and are always looking for ways to improve our processes. We currently Manage and optimize a large-scale SQL Server environment spanning hundreds of instances across hybrid infrastructure (onprem VMware and AWS), as well as installations of various relational and NoSQL database platforms including MongoDB, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, MySQL, Postgres, and Redis. These database systems touch all aspects of the business. On the DBRE team, we have a strong culture of curiosity, honesty, and a love of collaboration and constant learning.  

As a Senior Database Reliability Engineer, you are expected to embody these values and help foster them among your fellow team members. You are responsible for managing a variety of database systems and designing and leading your own projects with a highly technical approach.

Responsibilities

• Ensure maximum availability and reliability of mission-critical database systems across hybrid infrastructure.
• Design, implement, and maintain SQL Server Always-on Availability Groups, clustering, and replication topologies. Constantly improve the observability of all database systems.
• Lead major database upgrade initiatives and modernization efforts. Support other engineers and teams in their use of database systems.
• Continuously enhance observability using telemetry, performance analysis, and proactive monitoring.
• Continuously enhance processes through automation. Automate operational workflows using PowerShell, Python, and CI/CD tooling.
• Ensure all data is protected and secure
• Participate in our on-call rotation
• Troubleshoot and tune high-load production systems, including complex performance and replication issues.
• Lead technical response during high-severity incidents and conduct root cause analysis.
• Ensure database security, backup integrity, and disaster recovery readiness.
• Contribute to the development of best practices for database engineering and reliability.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to design scalable, resilient data architectures.
• Mentor team members and contribute to engineering best practices.

Qualifications 

Minimum Qualifications  

• 3+ years of hands-on experience managing database systems
• Basic understanding of multi-tenant, database-driven applications
• Familiarity with common data storage technologies and use cases
• Proficiency in a common high-level language such as PowerShell or Python
• Design, implement, and support SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, clustering, and transactional replication
• Lead and execute major upgrade initiatives (e.g., SQL Server version upgrades, compatibilitylevel transitions)
• Own disaster recovery validation and failover strategy execution
• Investigate and resolve complex replication and distribution database failures

Preferred Qualifications 

• 5+ years of hands-on experience administering production database systems at scale
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field
• Experience with database high-availability technologies
• Experience with MongoDB (including replica sets and Atlas), DynamoDB, or other distributed NoSQL platforms
• Familiarity with cloud-native database architectures (AWS preferred)
• Exposure to data platform modernization initiatives (e.g., migration to newer engine versions, consolidation, cloud adoption)
• Knowledge of relational database design concepts in an OLTP environment

For this position, the expected base pay range is: $90,000-$140,000 per year. 

This range represents the base pay for the role across all U.S. locations and is determined based on market data, internal equity, and experience. Final compensation may vary depending on geographic location, skills, and relevant experience.In addition to base pay, we offer a discretionary bonus for non-sales roles, a comprehensive benefits package, and, where applicable, sales incentives.

For this position, the expected discretionary bonus is 10% of the annual base salary.

What you'll bring to the role:

• 5-8 years of experience in Observability Architecture, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Platform/Infrastructure Engineering.

• Post-secondary Diploma/Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

• Mastery of the OpenTelemetry ecosystem and expert-level knowledge of Prometheus-compatible metrics systems (VictoriaMetrics, Thanos, etc.).

• Advanced experience with tracing systems (Grafana Tempo, Jaeger) and log aggregation platforms (Loki, Elasticsearch, Google BigQuery).
