Structural Steel Quality Assurance Inspector

Starting Pay: Up to $32.00 per hour (higher compensation may be available based on experience)
Position Summary
We are looking for a detail-oriented Structural Steel Quality Assurance Inspector to support quality operations in a structural steel fabrication facility. This position is responsible for inspecting fabricated steel components, welds, and protective coatings to ensure compliance with project requirements, industry standards, and internal quality procedures.
This role is primarily based on the production floor and requires frequent interaction with fabrication personnel. The work environment is an active manufacturing facility with limited office time and exposure to changing temperatures.
Primary Responsibilities
Inspect fabricated structural steel assemblies for quality, accuracy, and specification compliance.
Verify work meets applicable industry requirements, including AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, AISC, and other relevant standards.
Perform inspections of incoming materials, components, and welding consumables before production use.
Identify, document, and track inspected materials according to established quality procedures.
Maintain inspection reports, quality records, and related documentation.
Calibrate and maintain welding equipment and quality inspection instruments.
Assist with welder qualification testing and certification activities.
Support training related to welding procedures, fitting practices, and quality standards.
Maintain drawing control and other quality system documentation.
Partner with production and leadership teams to investigate and resolve quality issues.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and ongoing safety programs.
Promote safe work practices throughout the facility.
Required Qualifications
At least 2 years of experience in structural steel fabrication.
Previous experience in quality inspection, quality control, or a similar manufacturing position.
Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC standards.
Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and project specifications.
Experience using quality inspection tools, including:
- Fillet weld gauges
- V-WAC gauges
- Squares
- Tape measures
- Standard inspection and measuring equipment
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple inspection tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
Preferred Qualifications
Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
Experience performing or supporting nondestructive testing methods, including:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Additional certifications related to structural steel fabrication, welding inspection, coatings, or bolting.
- Previous experience working in a structural steel manufacturing environment.
Work Environment
Production floor-based position with minimal office work.
Non-climate-controlled manufacturing facility.
Regular standing, walking, and inspecting materials throughout the shift.
