Job Description
Lead the design, engineering and continuous improvement of automation capabilities within the EMS team, supporting observability and service-management platforms such as BMC Helix, BMC Remedy, Splunk, AppDynamics and related enterprise tools. This is an independent contributor role with end-to-end ownership for delivering secure, scalable and supportable automation across enterprise monitoring and IT operations.
The Automation Lead will serve as the technical lead for automation within the EMS team, converting operational requirements into resilient automation solutions that improve efficiency, reliability and control. The role will work independently across the full delivery lifecycle, from discovery and solution design through development, testing, implementation and Day 2 support. The incumbent will provide technical direction, establish engineering standards and influence cross-functional stakeholders without direct people-management responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
Automation Strategy and Technical Leadership
• Define and maintain the EMS automation roadmap, architecture patterns, engineering standards and reusable frameworks.
• Identify and prioritise high-value automation opportunities across monitoring, event management, service operations and platform administration.
• Act as the technical authority for solution design, code quality, maintainability, security and operational readiness.
• Provide technical guidance and design assurance to engineers, vendors and delivery partners while remaining accountable as an independent contributor.
Solution Engineering and Delivery
• Design, develop, test and implement automation workflows, scripts, APIs, integrations and orchestration solutions.
• Build automation for event enrichment, correlation, alert suppression, ticket creation and remediation, health checks, reporting and configuration validation.
• Integrate enterprise monitoring and observability platforms with ITSM, collaboration, infrastructure, application and cloud services.
• Apply source control, peer review, testing, CI/CD and release-management practices to automation deliverables.
• Create reusable components and self-service capabilities that reduce manual effort and accelerate operational response.
Platform Reliability and Day 2 Operations
• Own the reliability, performance, capacity and supportability of automation services delivered by the EMS team.
• Perform advanced troubleshooting, root-cause analysis and problem resolution for automation failures and integration issues.
• Develop monitoring, logging, exception handling, audit trails, recovery procedures and operational dashboards for automation solutions.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, support procedures and knowledge articles, and ensure effective operational handover.
Required Experience and Technical Skills
• Strong hands-on experience in automation engineering, systems integration or platform engineering within a large enterprise environment.
• Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language such as Python, PowerShell or Shell, with sound software-engineering practices.
• Experience with REST APIs, webhooks, JSON, authentication methods, databases and integration patterns.
• Working knowledge of monitoring and observability technologies across infrastructure, applications, logs, events and capacity. Exposure to platforms such as BMC Helix, Splunk, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana or ELK is advantageous.
• Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, containers, Linux and Windows environments.
• Understanding of ITSM and IT operations processes, including incident, problem, change, event and configuration management.
• Knowledge of cloud, DevOps, AIOps or infrastructure-as-code concepts is advantageous.
Core Competencies
• End-to-end ownership with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Strong analytical thinking, structured problem solving and attention to operational detail.
• Ability to translate operational pain points into practical, scalable and measurable automation solutions.
• Effective communication, stakeholder engagement and influencing skills across technical and management audiences.
• Strong documentation discipline and commitment to engineering quality, security and service reliability.
Education and Professional Background
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Relevant certifications in automation, cloud, DevOps, observability, IT service management or platform technologies are advantageous.
