Description of Work

The North Carolina Zoo has an exciting opportunity to join our team. We are seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to serve as a Summer Camp Programmer.

In this role, the Summer Camp Programmer will provide engaging, developmentally appropriate programs for school‑age students, facilitating meaningful Zoo experiences and ensuring camper safety and wellbeing throughout full‑day programming. Additionally, the position will support the Lead Seasonal Educator and Camp Coordinator by maintaining educational supplies, ensuring classroom cleanliness, and assisting with the overall preparation and delivery of summer camp activities.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

*Present and evaluate non‑formal education programs and day camps—including virtual camps and KidZu Camp, which is tailored for children on the autism spectrum—as part of a collaborative team.
*Utilize biofacts to enhance programming and tailor content to the needs of diverse audiences, ensuring all materials remain safe and properly accounted for.
*Supervise campers and ensure their safety, engagement, and wellbeing throughout all program activities.
*Maintain classroom spaces, restrooms, snack areas, and educational supplies to ensure safety, cleanliness, and readiness for daily programming.
*Maintain a working knowledge of all relevant Zoo and state policies and procedures.
*Support CES department programming needs as assigned, including but not limited to special events and pop‑up educational programs.

Recruitment Range: $17.00 per hour

• Experience handling animal ambassadors as part of educational programming

• First Aid and CPR certification

Position & Physical Requirements

• Must be available to work a diverse work schedule, with most hours between 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday–Friday from late May through mid‑August. Early morning or after‑hours special events may be required.

• Knowledge of basic natural sciences such as zoology, biology, or ecology.

• Knowledge of basic educational and interpretive techniques.

• Must have public speaking experience with the ability to correctly answer questions and patiently explain difficult material.

• Experience working with all ages and providing age‑appropriate programs.

• Strong communication, decision‑making, and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively in a team setting and alone.

• Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to take initiative and work independently.

• Must possess physical ability to stand and walk for long periods of time as well as move large boxes in varying weather conditions.

• Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

• Ability to drive a 17‑passenger bus on Zoo grounds.

Minimum Education and Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. • Associates degree in natural sciences, education, or a related field

Or

• Successful completion of two years of a four‑year degree program in education, communications, natural sciences, or a related field

Or

• High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma

And

• At least two years of education experience working with a variety of audiences in a role such as camp counselor, schoolteacher, or non‑formal educator (e.g., Zoo, Aquarium, Museum, Park, or Nature Center)

If there are no qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum Education and Experience or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position, the agency may consider for this position a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements. Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly as the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education and experience to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with the state application. 

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
