About the team

Acquisition Engineering owns the customer journey from first touch to first value: helping prospective customers discover Brex, apply, get approved, onboard quickly, and adopt more of the platform over time. The group brings together GTM Engineering, Salesforce, Onboarding, and Adoption, with a shared mission to acquire customers faster and deliver value sooner.

We operate at the intersection of customer experience, revenue, and operational scale. Our work improves funnel conversion, reduces time to first transaction, equips go-to-market teams with high-leverage systems, and creates product experiences that drive durable adoption and expansion.

What you’ll do

We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to operate across Acquisition Engineering. You won’t be limited to a single team or service; your mandate is to identify the highest-impact technical opportunities across the funnel—especially the cross-team gaps that no individual team can solve alone—and drive them to durable outcomes.

This is a leadership role without direct reports. You’ll set technical direction, raise the bar for system design and execution, and multiply the effectiveness of engineers and engineering managers across the group. You’ll partner closely with Staff Engineers, product leaders, and GTM stakeholders to shape where we invest and how we deliver customer and business impact.

Where you’ll work

This role will be based in San Francisco. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We require three days per week in the office—Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday—and offer up to four weeks per year of fully remote work.

Responsibilities:

• Identify and lead the most consequential technical initiatives across Acquisition Engineering, from first touch through onboarding, activation, and ongoing adoption.
• Set technical direction for cross-team systems, including architecture, platform boundaries, reliability, and data quality.
• Partner with GTM Engineering, Salesforce, Onboarding, and Adoption to simplify handoffs and improve end-to-end customer and operator experiences.
• Raise the technical bar through design reviews, hands-on implementation, operational excellence, and pragmatic engineering standards.
• Champion repeatable, secure, and high-velocity delivery across the group, including strong practices for code review, deployment safety, and operational excellence.
• Act as a force multiplier by mentoring senior engineers, improving how teams plan and execute, and developing the next generation of technical leaders.
• Collaborate with product, design, data, operations, and go-to-market partners to translate ambiguous business opportunities into scalable technical solutions.
• Bring an AI-forward mindset to how the group builds customer experiences, internal tooling, and engineering workflows.

Requirements:

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of technical leadership across multiple teams or a large product area.
• Demonstrated ability to identify and drive ambiguous, cross-cutting problems to resolution without a narrowly defined charter.
• Deep experience designing, building, and operating large-scale backend or full-stack systems in production.
• Strong product and business judgment, with the ability to connect technical investments to customer experience, growth, and operational outcomes.
• Proven ability to influence across engineering, product, and business stakeholders without direct authority.
• Strong collaboration, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical trade-offs to senior business and engineering stakeholders.

Compensation:

The expected salary range for this role is $240,000 - $300,000. However, the starting base pay will depend on a number of factors including the candidate’s location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
