About the Role

The News Product Foundations team at the New York Times builds and maintains a flexible system of editorial, technical and data infrastructure tools to help surface the best of our journalism to readers. You’ll support the GraphQL back-end for our personalization infrastructure, which powers the delivery of machine learning recommendations on our homepage and story pages, across both our web and mobile apps.

You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager within the Reader experience Technology Team 

Responsibilities:

  • Support, maintain, and enhance the GraphQL subgraph that powers our personalized experiences, within an Apollo Federation–based architecture.
  • Contribute to other back-end systems that improve the quality of our product and the discoverability of our content.
  • Own and continuously improve the performance, reliability, and scalability of our personalization services to ensure a fast and resilient reader experience.
  • Lead the development and optimization of data and technical infrastructure that connects our machine learning platform to editorial tools and surfaces.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
  • You will report to a Senior Engineering Manager for the News Product Foundations team.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in programming languages that are backend focused (Node / Typescript, Go, Java, Python)
  • 3+ years of experience designing, implementing, and maintaining GraphQL APIs in production, including schema design and resolver performance tuning.
  • 3+ years of experience with cloud-based deployments on Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform
  • Experience building and evolving backend APIs (REST and/or GraphQL) with a focus on reliability, observability, and clear contracts between services and clients.

This role is hybrid, located at our New York City headquarters, and typically requires coming into the office two days per week.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$140,000$160,000 USD

Additional Compensation and Benefits

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
