Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:
The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park (www.chbe.umd.edu), invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position. The successful candidate will develop an impactful, externally funded research program, teach, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and contribute to the department’s collaborative culture and broader mission. This will include strong scholarly work, innovative instruction at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, participation in faculty governance and institution-building, service to the broader scientific community, and building partnerships within the department, the A. James Clark School of Engineering and the university, as well as with industrial, governmental, or community partners. Applicants with a research focus on biomanufacturing, biopharmaceuticals, process design/control, and women’s health will be of particular interest, especially those applying machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches. Those with a mix of ML/DL/AI and wet lab research are encouraged to apply.

● The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department (ChBE) currently consists of
17 tenure/tenure-track faculty
● The College received a significant gift from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation of
$220M. This includes funding to assist faculty and attract and fund first-year PhD
students.
● The A. James Clark School of Engineering has added or will be completing several new
buildings (Clark Hall and Zupnik Hall) that offer expansive lab space, innovation labs for
capstone design projects, and a quantum technology center.
● UMD is a leader in Quantum Computing (quantum.umd.edu) that partners with leaders
in the computing industry and government.
● UMD is also a leader in Artificial Intelligence (ai.umd.edu) with a recently formed center
Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland (AIM)

Candidates will be expected to establish a creative, well-funded, and collaborative research program that will serve to educate graduate and undergraduate students and advance their field.  Candidates should be effective communicators and have the ability and interest to work with student populations from a variety of backgrounds, learning styles, and skill levels. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses within the department. Postdoctoral training beyond the Ph.D. is viewed as providing additional training needed to be successful as an Assistant / Associate / Full Professor, but it is not mandatory.
