Job Description:
The Market Risk Analyst will be accountable for providing deep business understanding and control through the delivery of value-add reporting and analysis. This role holds the primary interface into the trading front office for a specific set of trading activity, balancing independence with a business enabling partnership. It requires a deep understanding of the activities within Market Risk and MI Analytics to meet the team’s core accountability of delivering independent daily exposures, VaR reporting, and analysis.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Understand trading strategies and provide independent challenge and support to Front Office within a risk management framework in line with ST&S Market Risk Standard and Delegation of Authority.
- Identify market risk issues across relevant markets, coordinate solution development and support implementation with Commodity Risk, Analytics and Technology teams.
- Run and administer market risk models and analytics, ensuring outputs are robust, explainable and effectively challenged through engagement with Front Office.
- Work with the Global Market Risk Team to promote strong market risk discipline, control and consistent methodology across the business.
- Contribute to ST&S market risk policies and procedures, acting as a commercial partner to support and challenge day-to-day trading activity and longer-term strategic deals.
Job Functional Knowledge
- Requires previous market risk or relevant Front Office/Analytics experience gained within bp or the wider energy trading sector.
- Applies strong technical capability in Excel and programming tools such as Python or Excel VBA to support robust analysis across portfolios, desks and regions.
Business Expertise
- Requires strong understanding of ST&S or a comparable global energy trading business, including the commercial strategies, economic drivers and valuation techniques that underpin trading decisions and sophisticated deals.
- Demonstrates sound knowledge of commodity trading fundamentals, including options, derivatives and other trading instruments, and how it translates into risk, value, and business outcomes.
Leadership
- Provides technical leadership and guidance through expertise, sound judgement and credible challenge across a defined market risk scope.
- Supports knowledge transfer and promotes consistent methodology across desks and regions, helping strengthen capability and alignment within Market Risk and across ST&S.
Problem Solving
- Requires strong analytical judgement, commercial discernment and decision-making skills to evaluate exposures, sophisticated deals, economic drivers and valuation outputs.
- Able to interpret complex or incomplete information, identify key risk issues and develop practical solutions with minimum guidance, while balancing risk, control and commercial considerations.
Nature and Area of Impact
- Has a direct impact on market risk transparency, Front Office challenge, deal assessment and commercial decision-making within the assigned trading activity.
- Outputs support timely and effective risk management, promote consistent standards across Market Risk and influence confidence in reporting, governance, and control.
Interpersonal skills
- Operates as a strong team player within a dynamic trading business, building credible relationships across ST&S.
- Communicates complex topics clearly and supports knowledge transfer through a collaborative, solutions-focused approach.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Science), or equivalent experience
- Professional accounting qualification or advanced degree in accounting, finance or a related discipline.
- Experience in commodity trading or supply, with strong preference for derivative accounting, fair value valuation, valuation controls, internal controls, statutory reporting, audit, global service delivery, and process or technology transformation.
- Previous Market Risk or relevant Commercial/Analytics experience is preferred.
