Position Summary:
The Manager, Packaging Engineer will play a key role in driving packaging development across Naturium reporting to the Sr. Manager of Package Engineer. The engineer will be part of the team leading the packaging efforts to phase packaging portfolio into global sustainability compliancy are delivered with excellence.
The Manager, Packaging Engineer role is based in E.L.F. LA office and will work collaboratively with the packaging compliance & sustainability team in Oakland CA, PD, Sourcing, planning, creative team in LA.
The individual will be responsible for assessing how sustainability and compliancy regulations apply to the packaging portfolio and lead packaging development from sustainability goals, technical analysis, testing, packaging decoration execution with PCR, and filling. The engineer must have the ability to adapt to fast-changing environments and should be a creative problem solver, able to consider new approaches to improve the organization's competitive position.
Responsibilities:
Provide expertise and ensure organizational capability in packaging development and process engineering to ensure successful and efficient phase-in for sustainability and compliance life cycle projects.
Support the company efforts on social and environmental responsibility, specifically through driving sustainable design and materials for our packaging.
Partner with creative team, sourcing team, and China team to deliver Post-Consumer Recycled(PCR) and Post-Industrial Recycled (PIR) material into packaging with premium color matching, decoration, documentation compliancy.
Support sourcing and cost-reduction initiatives by leading supplier negotiations to meet or exceed company gross margin and target cost goals.
Update Naturium portfolio with the latest PCR/PIR content along with compliancy documentations.
Own the Declaration of Conformity implementation across the portfolio.
Build strong relationship across functional teams to develop, implement and align with the e.l.f.’ s strategy with long term vision.
Understand that the first consumer experience is the package. Represent the culture and DNA of the brand or business segment being managed
Provide updates of project milestones, inform appropriate people of technical and timing issues and call out any red flags on a timely basis
Provide technical solutions and work with the cross functional team on timeline target, cost avoidance, and quality improvement
Develop risk assessments and timetables when needed
Evaluate package samples, prototypes and supplier technical capability
Communicate effectively with packaging suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure all specifications are adhered to
Requirements:
BS degree in Packaging Science or Engineering
5+ years’ experience in cosmetic package development
Concentrated experience in beauty industry with proven development experience in skin care, fragrance, and color categories
Comprehensive knowledge of global supplier community and strong understanding of mechanical and chemical PCR and PIR structures
Demonstrated understanding of manufacturing and distribution process as it relates to supporting targeted and global product launch strategies
Deep/practical packaging expertise in sustainability and abreast of best practices and emerging opportunities/technologies that support sustainability objectives
Able to create package specification, fill and assemblies, and control plan
Provide updates of project milestones, inform appropriate people of technical and timing issues
Audit testing to qualify new packages
Ensure all projects are completed and meet the intended design, quality, cost, functionality, manufacturability, regulatory, consumer safety and objectives
Provide technical solutions and work with the cross functional team on timeline target, cost avoidance, and quality improvement
Maintain technical contact with suppliers
Understanding of sustainability initiatives and upcoming packaging regulations
Develop risk assessments and timetables
The base salary range for this role is listed above.
Total compensation includes base salary, annual company-based performance bonus, and equity. Under e.l.f.’s annual bonus program, employees are eligible to earn up to 200% of their target bonus when company performance exceeds defined goals. In addition, e.l.f. provides a variety of other benefits to employees, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a retirement savings plan, gender neutral parental leave, and unlimited paid time off. The amount of total compensation (including base salary) offered will be based on a wide range of factors, including geographic location, experience, specific skills, and qualifications.
