Investment Analyst, Tokyo

The Investment Analyst will support Equity Product Management within the Client Platform in Tokyo. The Equity Product Management (“EPM”) group at Wellington Management works closely with our equity investment teams, relationship teams, and business colleagues across the firm to support our clients’ investment needs. Our equity investors span a wide range of disciplines, geographies, industries, market capitalizations, and styles. The product management function has three main objectives: 

  • Product Commercialization and Growth: EPM contributes to client growth and retention by assessing business opportunities and leading business planning, developing new products and investment solutions, creating the communication strategy for the book of business, including materials that differentiate the product relative to competitors and acting as a subject matter expert and portfolio representative for colleagues, clients and consultants. 

  • Investment Integrity and Risk Management: EPM acts as an independent advisor to ensure the integrity of the investment and risk management processes, as well as consistency with client parameters and objectives, conducts regular product risk and performance attributions reviews, and contributes to formal, investment review group processes. 

  • Business Management: EPM contributes to business management, including managing risk, capacity, pricing and guidelines, leads resolution of internal business challenges, and collaborates on product management business to share investment integrity, marketing and product development best practices. 

The Investment Analyst role is designed for a developing investment professional with a strong interest in equities, capital markets, and client engagement. The individual will build expertise across a broad range of Wellington's equity strategies and, over time, develop into a trusted representative of those strategies for Japanese clients and business partners.

Working closely with Investment Directors, Investment Specialists, portfolio managers, relationship managers, and consultants, the Analyst will contribute to portfolio and market analysis, investment insights, business management initiatives, and client communications. A key aspect of the role is developing the ability to articulate investment views, portfolio developments, and market insights clearly and confidently in Japanese, both in meetings and presentations.

We are seeking intellectually curious individuals who combine strong analytical capability with excellent communication and presentation skills. While investment management, equity research, or product management experience can be valuable, we welcome candidates from a broad range of financial services backgrounds, particularly those with client-facing experience and a genuine passion for investing.

Successful candidates will be eager to learn, comfortable engaging with clients and stakeholders, and motivated to build long-term expertise in equity investing while translating complex investment concepts into clear and compelling messages.

This role should provide structured exposure to equity portfolio analysis, product positioning, portfolio review preparation, client materials, and internal product-management processes. Over time, a successful analyst should develop the investment knowledge, judgment, and communication capability required to progress toward Investment Specialist responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Support Investment Directors and Investment Specialists in Equity Product Management across portfolio analysis, product integrity, product development, marketing, and client-servicing activities.

  • Use internal and third-party systems to access current and historical portfolio, market, benchmark, attribution, and risk data.

  • Assist in analyzing portfolio positioning, performance, characteristics, attribution, style exposures, risk indicators, and competitive positioning; summarize key observations clearly for internal and external use.

  • Help prepare materials for client, prospect, and consultant meetings, including portfolio reviews, investment updates, market commentary, charts, exhibits, and briefing notes.

  • Translate, adapt, or quality-check selected materials in Japanese and English, ensuring accuracy, tone, and consistency for local-market use.

  • Respond to product- and market-related questions from internal stakeholders by gathering data, checking facts, coordinating inputs, and producing clear written summaries.

  • Support RFP, due diligence, and questionnaire responses by reviewing product information, validating data, maintaining standard language, and coordinating with relevant contributors.

  • Conduct market, competitor, product, capacity, and client-needs analysis to support product development and business-management discussions.

  • Maintain and improve recurring marketing and review materials, product databases, internal trackers, and team workflows.

  • Identify opportunities to build efficiencies through better use of technology, AI, templates, automation, data management, and process discipline.

  • Develop deep familiarity with assigned equity strategies, including investment philosophy, process, portfolio construction, positioning, performance drivers, risks, and market environment.

  • Participate in internal product reviews and investment-related meetings, with the expectation of gradually increasing contribution as expertise develops.

  • Present in select external client meetings with a clearly defined role alongside an Investment Director or Portfolio Manager, gaining greater independence as expertise develops.  

Qualifications

  • Typically 2–5 years of relevant experience in investment management, equity research, investment consulting, product management, product reporting, client reporting, RFP/questionnaire support, capital markets, or another relevant financial-services role.

  • Strong interest in equity investing, capital markets, and the business of investment management.

  • Demonstrated analytical and quantitative capability, including comfort working with portfolio, market, performance, attribution, risk, and benchmark data.

  • Strong academic record; finance, economics, accounting, business, mathematics, engineering, data analytics, or other analytical background would be relevant.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Japanese and English.

  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills; comfort working with large datasets and improving recurring processes through technology or automation, including the use of AI tools.

  • High attention to detail, strong organization, and ability to manage multiple priorities under deadline pressure.

  • Intellectual curiosity, initiative, resourcefulness, and willingness to learn from investment and product colleagues.

  • Positive, collegial, professional approach; ability to work independently while contributing effectively in a team-based environment.

  • CFA, CMA, MBA, or progress toward relevant investment qualifications is desirable but not required.
