Under the direction of the HVAC Supervisor, the Refrigeration Technician I installs, troubleshoots, performs preventative maintenance, and repairs HVAC equipment and distribution systems involving work of a varied nature with minimum supervision. This work is accomplished throughout the 100 buildings and 235 acres of Brandeis’ Campus.

Must have extensive knowledge of codes regarding installation of HVAC/R systems, refrigeration, and associated equipment. Must have a minimum of five years’ experience in the general maintenance field and be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic maintenance skills.

This position is a Local 615, 32BJ Service Employees International Union (SEIU) position.

The hourly rate for this position is $47.29.

This is a 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Refrigeration Technician I Functions

  • Relays information, assignments and schedules to others as directed by supervisor or manager.

  • Relays status/progress of on-going work from other shop employees to supervisors/management on a regular basis, as defined by management.

  • Assists with work distribution and prioritization when necessary.

  • Trains, orients and instructs other staff as directed.

  • Acts as a liaison between other union staff and supervisors/management to facilitate and ensure good communications.

  • Collaborate and consults with contractors and/or Campus Staff as needed.

  • Attend leadership meetings as needed.

  • Obtain required permits when necessary.

Main Functions

  • Report any issues to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Must have sufficient knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical equipment to make minor repairs and adjustments. This includes pneumatic, electrical and D.D.C. Type control systems.

  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and makes repairs to HVAC equipment and systems including controls, bearings, filters, compressors, belts, motors, etc.

  • Extensive knowledge of and use of computers regarding Building Management Systems (BMS).

  • Operate, maintain and repair all aspects of laboratory equipment directly connected to the various HVAC systems such as refrigeration, air, gas, vacuum, hoods, etc.

  • Keep records, write reports and identify HVAC materials.

  • Work from blueprints, drawings, sketches and/or verbal instructions to plan, layout and install piping and equipment.

  • Make standard shop computations relating to pressure, flow and specifications required.

  • Perform standard tests to determine whether equipment meet specifications.

  • Make major and minor repairs to Heating, Ventilation, Air conditioning and Refrigeration equipment in and around campus facilities.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on all equipment.

  • Make repairs on various types of pumps, valves and pressure regulators of various sizes.

  • Shape, cut, ream, caulk, sweat, solder and thread a variety of piping sizes and types and related fittings using various hand tools and power-driven machines.

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair HVAC and mechanical equipment.

  • Work from blueprints, drawings, sketches and/or verbal instructions to plan, layout and install equipment.

  • Must be able to work from ladders, bucket trucks, scaffolds, pits, and manholes.

  • Installs appliances and equipment as needed.

  • Must be able to work alone with minimal supervision.

  • Provides appropriate support during events, annual electrical shutdown, opening of school and commencement.

General Functions

  • Follow proper safety procedures and observe all safety rules and regulations including OSHA.

  • Reports building damage, malfunctioning equipment, needed maintenance and /or repairs in assigned work areas.

  • Respond to emergency calls-ins as needed.

  • Read, write, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions in English.

  • Keeps logs and write shift reports.

  • Assess and update all work order assignments using the department's computerized work order management system.

  • Keeps logs, records time, writes reports (including shift reports), and identifies/requests materials, promptly using the management system and the stock room.

  • Participates in training to keep and acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities in order to remain current with standard operational practices and revised standards.

  • Establish and maintain a positive cooperative working relationship with supervisors, fellow workers, department heads, and other members of the campus community.

  • Work in an environment subject to frequent changing of priorities and time deadlines.

  • Drive a University Vehicle.

Job Qualifications and Requirements

Physical/Environmental Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.

  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.

  • Must work on ladders, bucks trucks, scaffolds, and pits.

  • Manually lift up to 60 pounds. Heavier material or equipment is lifted using other methods.

  • Work inside and outside all campus buildings and grounds; including on rooftops, in vaults, and outside throughout campus property.

  • Work will be performed in and outside during all New England seasons.

Education, Work and License Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED required, vocational or technical training required.

  • Valid and current United States Driver’s License required.

  • Valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technicians License required.

  • EPA Universal Certification required.

  • Valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractors License required.

  • OSHA 10 training preferred.

  • Work Experience: 5 years’ total work-related experience.

Additional Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Frequent use of verbal and written skills through the work order system. May explain and offer guidance on routine procedures.

  • Must have a good working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, and basic carpentry in order to address minor repairs and adjustments on their own.

  • Must be able to use hand and power tools.

  • Has frequent contact with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to give or obtain information or delivery service. Results can affect own functional area.

  • Must have the ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior managers.

  • Decisions may affect a work unit or area within a department. May contribute to business and operational decisions that affect the department.

  • Problems are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation. Problems are solved using knowledge and skills, general precedents, and practices.

  • Results are defined. Determines how to accomplish results with little guidance. Supervision/manager provides broad guidance and overall direction.

  • Must be able to work within Facilities Services budget.
