SPC oversees firms and individuals (supervision), creates and reviews the rules by which they operate (policy) and identifies and remedies ineffective competition in markets (competition.

The Financial Crime Market Intervention department, within the Specialist Directorate, provides specialist expertise to help reduce the risk that regulated businesses are used for financial crime.

The department includes four Financial Crime Specialist Supervision teams, a Sanctions Supervision Team, a Fraud Supervision Team and a Risk, Data and Strategy Team. Working with colleagues across the FCA and external partners, it focuses on money laundering, financial sanctions, fraud, bribery and corruption. This role sits in the Risk, Data and Strategy Team.

Role responsibilities 

• Help shape innovative data-led approaches that enhance the FCA’s ability to prevent and detect financial crime, protecting consumers and markets across the UK
• Turn complex data into clear, actionable insights that support supervisory decisions and drive meaningful regulatory outcomes
• Collaborate with colleagues across Data and Supervision to deliver impactful projects that enhance the FCA’s financial crime capabilities
• Develop specialist skills in data analytics within a high-profile regulatory environment, building skills and experience that can help protect millions of consumers

Skills required 

Minimum: 

• Prior experience using Excel, SQL, or another data analytics tool to interrogate and manipulate data
• Prior experience analysing data to answer defined questions and draw practical conclusions
• Prior experience presenting analysis clearly in written, visual, or verbal formats

Essential:  

• Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain data analysis and insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Ability to deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines, using initiative and sound judgement
• Well-developed stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships, provide constructive challenge and confidently engage with senior stakeholders
• Ability to prioritise competing demands and manage multiple pieces of work with minimal supervision
• A collaborative and forward-thinking approach, demonstrating curiosity, innovation and a positive attitude to problem-solving
• Confidence in making informed judgements, taking timely decisions and learning from experience to continuously improve outcomes
• Experience creating data visualisation dashboards (e.g. Tableau), analytical programming languages (e.g. Python, R or advanced SQL) and knowledge of financial services, regulation, financial crime, or supervisory data is desirable
