Job Role: Figma Design Systems Specialist - 1357

Compensation range: Under $2,500 AUD / Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

Who The Client Is: Our client is an Australian digital experience agency that works across enterprise websites, digital products, and content platforms for a range of organisations and brands. The business brings together experience design, technology, and digital delivery teams to help clients build and improve modern digital experiences. With multiple projects running across different clients and brands, they work with established digital platforms as well as new products and experiences being developed from the ground up.

As part of their continued growth, they are looking for a specialist who can bring deeper expertise in design systems and Figma to help improve consistency, scalability, and efficiency across client engagements.

Role Overview: We're looking for an experienced Figma Design Systems Specialist to support the creation, evolution, optimisation, and governance of Figma design libraries across multiple client engagements.

This is a hands-on specialist role working across both existing design systems and new systems built from the ground up. You'll be responsible for improving component architecture, establishing scalable design standards, supporting library rationalisation, and helping teams adopt consistent design system practices.

You'll work closely with Experience Design and Front-End Development teams to ensure Figma libraries are structured effectively and can align with development component frameworks and workflows.

The ideal candidate has advanced Figma expertise, strong UI architecture knowledge, and a proven ability to build and scale design systems across complex digital projects.

Key Responsibilities: 

Design System Optimisation

• Audit existing Figma files, libraries, components, and usage.
• Assess the quality, scalability and adoption of existing design systems.
• Identify and consolidate duplicate or inconsistent components.
• Improve component architecture, naming conventions, and library organisation.
• Extend existing libraries with new components, patterns and templates.
• Establish or improve design tokens and Figma variables.
• Support library migration and rationalisation activities.
• Develop governance, contribution and release processes.
• Improve adoption and consistent usage across project teams.
• Align Figma assets with front-end component frameworks and Storybook where applicable.

Design System Creation

• Establish new Figma libraries and design systems from scratch.
• Define library structure and information architecture.
• Create foundational styles, tokens, and variable collections.
• Build scalable components using Auto Layout, variants, properties, and nested components.
• Develop responsive layout systems and standards.
• Create reusable templates, sections, and page patterns.
• Incorporate accessibility and WCAG requirements into component design.
• Establish documentation, governance and contribution guidelines.
• Support implementation and adoption by designers and developers.

Design Operations and Team Enablement

• Improve design efficiency through reusable assets, workflows, and standards.
• Mentor designers in advanced Figma and design system practices.
• Provide hands-on support to project teams using existing and new libraries.
• Collaborate with developers on design-to-code alignment.
• Support design system documentation and implementation.
• Contribute to project estimation, planning, and pre-sales activities where design system expertise is required.
• Work across multiple client projects and brands, adapting systems to varying levels of digital maturity.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• 5+ years' experience in UI, UX, or Product Design.
• Demonstrated experience creating and managing enterprise design systems.
• Expert-level Figma proficiency.
• Advanced knowledge of:
• Components and nested components
• Variants and component properties
• Auto Layout
• Variables and design tokens
• Responsive component behaviour
• Library publishing and version management
• Proven experience improving and scaling existing design systems.
• Proven experience building design systems and component libraries from scratch.
• Strong understanding of UI architecture, accessibility and responsive design.
• Experience producing documentation, standards and governance frameworks.
• Ability to work independently across multiple client engagements.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Highly Desirable

• Storybook and design-to-code workflows.
• Front-end component framework knowledge.
• Multi-brand or multi-product design systems.
• Agency or consulting experience.
• Enterprise website and digital product delivery.
• Experience with DXP vendors including Sitecore, Contentful, Contentstack and Squiz platforms.
• Experience aligning design libraries with development component libraries.
