JOB SUMMARY:

The Jefferson County Department of Health is seeking part-time experienced Nutrition Consultants to plan, coordinate, implement, and oversee public health nutrition programs and services, including the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. Employees assess individuals and families for eligibility, provide nutrition education and counseling, develop appropriate nutrition interventions, and monitor participant progress and compliance with program requirements.

Responsibilities include overseeing WIC clinic operations, staff assignments and workflow, participant certification and benefit issuance, nutrition education and outreach, vendor and community coordination, records management, quality assurance, and program reporting. Employees ensure program activities comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and program standards.

Part-time: 16-24 hours per week.
Flexible work schedules.
Float between Central, Western, and Eastern locations.
Position is not benefit eligible.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
 

Option A:

• Current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

• Possession of licensure by the Alabama Board of Examiners for Dietetic/Nutrition Practice.

Option B:

• Current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

• Valid license to practice Dietetics/Nutrition from another state with the requirement to obtain Alabama licensure within 90 days of hire.

Option C:

• Possession of licensure by the Alabama Board of Examiners for Dietetic/Nutrition Practice.

• Must obtain registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) within six months of the hire date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County Health Department. These qualifications may be considered by the hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

• Experience providing nutrition education in a public health setting.

• Experience assessing the nutritional needs of individuals in various life stages (e.g., infants, children, pregnant women).

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

• Evaluates community nutrition and health needs by analyzing population health indicators, such as obesity prevalence and nutrition-related conditions, reviewing demographic and socioeconomic trends influencing nutrition outcomes, conducting community needs assessments, and preparing reports and recommendations to inform evidence-based public health planning and resource allocation.

• Administers federally funded nutrition programs by setting program goals, designing service delivery models, coordinating Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) services, and developing operational procedures and community partnerships to enhance nutrition education and expand access to healthy foods.

• WIC program operations by monitoring participation and services and evaluating effectiveness to ensure compliance with federal and state funding requirements and achieve program goals.

• Verifies identity, income, and residency documentation by conducting client interviews and nutrition history assessments, reviewing medical records and laboratory data to identify nutrition-related risk factors, and collecting anthropometric measurements and hemoglobin screenings to evaluate nutrition-related health risks among applicants in order to determine eligibility for program participation.

• Provides personalized nutrition counseling and education on infant feeding and healthy eating, and culturally appropriate care tailored to individual needs, life stage, and health status, identifying risk factors and educating clients on infant feeding, breastfeeding, formula preparation, and healthy dietary practices.

• Administers nutrition benefits by prescribing and managing formula, adjusting food packages, distributing breastfeeding equipment, and monitoring care plans to support effective nutrition interventions.

• Maintains program documentation and reporting requirements by recording client assessments, services, laboratory results, and follow-up care in electronic systems, maintaining participant records, and conducting program monitoring and evaluations to assess program outcomes and support regulatory compliance.

• Follows USDA, WIC, and public health program requirements by calibrating and sanitizing laboratory and measurement equipment, following established laboratory safety procedures, and monitoring program operations to support adherence to regulatory and program standards in order to maintain compliance with federal, state, and municipal regulations governing nutrition programs.

• Collaborates with healthcare providers and community organizations, including physicians, nurses, and social service agencies, to coordinate care, facilitate referrals to supportive services, and contribute to multi-agency initiatives that address health and nutrition needs, strengthening integrated nutrition and public health services.

• Trains the public, students, and community organizations on nutrition and WIC-related topics by developing and implementing educational programs, delivering presentations, distributing informational materials at health fairs and community events, and documenting outreach activities to support reporting and improve community health outcomes.

• Provides service to internal and external customers by responding to inquiries, resolving issues, and directing individuals to appropriate resources through in-person, phone, or electronic communication.

• Engages in professional development by attending training, conferences, classes, etc. to maintain professional certifications and licenses, and remain abreast of current practices, trends, and regulatory changes relevant to the field.

• Procures inventory and supplies to meet operational needs by evaluating vendor options, comparing pricing and availability, and following established procurement procedures and guidelines to ensure the availability of resources and cost-effective purchasing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting within medical or healthcare facilities. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Work involves use of medical tools and equipment necessary for the care and/or diagnosis of healthcare patients.
