The Opportunity

This is an exciting and newly created Consultant Archaeologist position to help us deliver Heritage (predominantly Aboriginal) projects across the markets Beca services in Australia. You will work on significant projects across renewable energy, transmission infrastructure, transport, water, social infrastructure and Defence sectors.

As a valued member of our Planning & Environment section, you will contribute to exciting and complex projects, balancing project delivery with client management, business development, and adherence to regulatory frameworks.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

• Prepare and contribute to high-quality technical reports including Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessments, Due Diligence Assessments, Heritage Impact Assessments and Excavation Reports.
• Support consultation and engagement with Aboriginal stakeholders, including Registered Aboriginal Parties, Local Aboriginal Land Councils and community representatives.
• Present technical findings and relay information to non-technical persons, including clients and community.
• Participate in archaeological field surveys, test excavations, and salvage operations across various NSW landscapes.
• Contribute to the preparation of proposals, value propositions, and presentations to clients.
• Assist with project management activities including scope delivery, scheduling, budgeting and coordination of field programs.
• Collaborate with planners, ecologists, environmental scientists and engineers to integrate heritage outcomes into broader project delivery.
• Maintain an in-depth knowledge of heritage and archaeological legislation, regulations, and guidelines, and apply this knowledge to assess significance, develop conservation strategies, and mitigate impacts on heritage and archaeological values.

About You

You will have a Bachelor (Honours) or Master’s degree in Archaeology, and an interest in Aboriginal archaeology.

This is an intermediate-level consulting role suited to a young professional with experience in Aboriginal cultural heritage and archaeology. Your career so far will preferably be in a consultancy environment, but we would also look at relevant experience in industry or government.  You will be able to demonstrate experience in Aboriginal cultural heritage assessment and archaeology within Australia, as well as participated in Aboriginal community consultation processes in accordance with NSW heritage requirements.  Knowledge of relevant State and Commonwealth heritage legislation and associated regulations and guidelines is essential

For mapping, field data management and heritage assessments you’ll have sound knowledge of using GIS software (ArcGIS Pro or QGIS).

The nature of the work means you will also need the ability to work on site, away from home and in remote locations, if necessary and hold an Australian Drivers licence (ideally with 4WD experience)

Familiarity with AHIP processes and the NSW Code of Practice for Archaeological Investigation of Aboriginal Objects in NSW and Aboriginal artefact analysis is desirable but not essential).
