CBC North is seeking a community reporter to join our N.W.T. news team, and we’re asking you to tell us what community you’d like to live and work in. We’re looking for a self-starter who can help us expand our coverage, either in a regional centre like Inuvik, Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Simpson, Behchokǫ̀ or one of our smaller communities.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated connection to the proposed community, and be a strong writer with a background in journalism or a related field. This position also requires a team player who understands time management, pays attention to detail and has a strong desire to cover local and regional news.

You will be part of a small but dynamic team currently working out of our Yellowknife and Inuvik bureaus. You will work to deadline daily, gathering, writing, editing and packaging content for video, digital and audio platforms.

This is a full-time, permanent position. You may be asked to work a variety of shifts, including early starts and late finishes and weekends.

Tasks/responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research, write and package original stories for all CBC platforms that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events – chasing, gathering, writing and packaging stories for digital, radio, social and video.
  • Regularly present stories on-air on radio and TV, providing background and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts in the Northwest Territories.

Requirements:

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a news and breaking news environment.
  • Knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of reporting for video and audio platforms.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the politics and issues of the Northwest Territories.
  • The ability to speak a language Indigenous to the NWT will be considered a major asset.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
