The Warehouse Chemist is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient management of chemicals and dangerous goods within warehouse operations. The role oversees the receipt, inspection, classification, storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials while ensuring compliance with local and international chemical safety regulations. The Warehouse Chemist provides technical expertise to support warehouse operations, minimize risks, maintain regulatory compliance, and promote best practices in chemical management. The position also supports audits, emergency response activities, and continuous improvement initiatives related to hazardous materials management.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, inspect, identify, classify, and verify chemicals and dangerous goods to ensure compliance with purchase specifications and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure the safe storage, segregation, handling, and transportation of chemicals in accordance with applicable safety standards and regulations.
- Conduct routine inspections of chemical storage areas and recommend corrective actions to address safety, environmental, and compliance risks.
- Monitor chemical inventory, shelf life, storage conditions, and maintain accurate records, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and regulatory documentation.
- Assess chemical compatibility and perform risk assessments to minimize hazards and support safe warehouse operations.
- Coordinate the safe disposal of expired, obsolete, or hazardous chemicals in compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and awareness training to warehouse personnel on chemical safety, hazardous material handling, PPE, and emergency response procedures.
- Collaborate with Procurement, HSE, Logistics, and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance, support audits, investigate incidents, and continuously improve chemical management practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Chemical Technology, or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in chemical warehouse operations, hazardous materials management, laboratory, or industrial chemical environments.
- Strong knowledge of chemical properties, hazard classification, compatibility, and hazardous material handling practices.
- Familiarity with applicable regulations, including GHS, IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), IMDG Code, ADR, and local regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in interpreting and applying Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and implementing safe chemical storage and segregation practices.
- Experience conducting chemical risk assessments, incident investigations, and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
- Good understanding of warehouse operations, inventory management systems, hazardous waste management, and environmental compliance.
- Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and warehouse management systems.
