One Subsurface internship programme – Petroleum Engineering
One Subsurface is an early careers programme designed to create a pipeline of diverse professional engineers who are high performers, have broad discipline experience, a transferable skills set and solving the most complex problems of today and of the future.
As a Petroleum Engineer (PE) intern, you will be part of the Subsurface organization’s Global Subsurface Solutions (GSS) arm and our vision is to become an industry-leading engine room of our integrated energy company; we will do this by putting safety first, reducing carbon emissions, improving efficiency, integrating across the value chain, and flexibly deploying talent to solve the most significant issues. At the heart of Subsurface lies our purpose of being a digitally enabled and agile team that can apply and nurture its subsurface skills to find, develop and manage a portfolio of high-value, carbon-efficient resources.
As a Petroleum engineer intern, you will be responsible for applying innovative digital and data science technologies to deliver system monitoring, optimization and capacity growth across the 4-chokes (Reservoir-Wells-Plant-Export) and developing well intervention requirements to maintain or improve the production of hydrocarbons and CO2 storage throughout the life of the field. Depending on your bp location and role, you will gain broad capability, primarily through job experience, in:
Reservoir and Well Performance: Participation in reservoir and well reviews; involvement in production forecasting, optimizing water, gas, and CO2 injection, or helping design Well intervention or surveillance programs.
System Optimization: Create and maintain numerical models, data analysis, and data visualization tools to optimize the integrated production system, delivering safe, reliable, low-carbon operations and identifying opportunities to grow installed production capacity.
Well Management: well performance tracking or well operations, real-time surveillance, and analyzing and developing data analytics solutions.
Role and responsibilities
The precise nature of your internship role and project will be determined by your skills as well as the needs of the business, but your responsibilities include:

Helping to maintain performance within your team and for bp as a company
Building relationships both within bp and with our external partners, collaborating across functions, segments and teams to deliver excellence
Demonstrating drive and dedication through the bp values with an emphasis on safety
During your internship you’ll get continuous feedback and guidance on how to plan and deliver your project, along with advice on what to look for and who to talk to. You’ll also be encouraged, individually and together with your intern peer group to find out as much as possible about other teams, disciplines and operations to broaden your understanding of the bp business. This is an assessed internship and may serve as a pathway to the 2028 graduate programme, subject to business needs at the time.
Requirements
Be currently pursuing a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in Petroleum Engineering, Applied Petroleum disciplines
Maintain a CGPA of 7 & above
Should be class of 2028 and be eligible for a 10-week internship between May to July 2027
Have a willingness to learn, a passion to excel and deliver results
In addition, demonstrable data science skills would be advantageous for any geoscience candidate applying for a role in bp. Specifically, proficiency in using statistical methods to interrogate large datasets for geological insight, and in the application of using scripting languages such as Python and R, and development environments such as Jupyter and Rstudio.
