We are seeking a Speech Language Pathologist for the Oregon School for the Deaf!

Annual Salary Range: $55,056 - $110,292

This position is full-time, Permanent, represented by the STEA.

More about us:

OSD provides direct 24-hour educational and residential services to approximately 130 students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, kindergarten through age 21.  The programs and departments at OSD include: Administration, Clerical, Classroom, Residential, Nutrition Services, Athletics, Educational Support Services, Maintenance/Custodial, and Student Health Services.  OSD also acts as a resource to the entire state, providing special activities, consultation, and educational services to students, professionals, families, and the public.

What we are looking for:

The ideal Speech Language Pathologist candidates provide language-rich environments and prepare themselves as the bilingual models of separate, distinct languages in English and American Sign Language (ASL).  They are committed to our campus-wide initiative that all students are supported as readers and writers in every setting. They reflect on their teaching effectiveness on an ongoing basis and they work collaboratively with every colleague to promote OSD as a valued and successful school program.

These positions prepare deaf and hard-of-hearing students for college and the world of work by providing services and instruction that allow students to develop their skills to the best of their ability. The successful candidate(s) may teach a range of curriculum levels depending on the needs of the assigned students each year.

Additional Requirements:

• Licensure through Teachers Standards and Practices Commission: Board of Examiners as a Speech-Language Pathologist or similar endorsement as a Communication Specialist with teaching English and ASL to Deaf/HH students. 

• ASLPI Level 3 certification within 12 weeks of beginning work. Teachers at OSD must possess an ASLPI Level 3 in order to make OSD a communication-accessible environment. The agency requires all teachers to provide certification that they are ASLPI Level 3 proficient. You must provide the certification to the agency within twelve (12) weeks of beginning work. OSD will provide payment for this assessment.

  • Or Intermediate or better (WOU) within 6 months of hire: WOU/Bridges Levels.

• Background Check - Applicants will be subject to a finger-print based criminal history check including driving record. Adverse background data may be grounds for immediate disqualification. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude an appointment. The circumstances involved in the conviction will be considered. ​

• May be required to pass Oregon Type 10 driving test to transport students in State vehicles.

• Basic first aid certification and CPR training.

What you will do:

As a Speech Language Pathologist at the Oregon School for the Deaf you will create a more inclusive learning environment for all students by creating a comprehensive communication skills-environment for learning and to help prepare deaf and hard-of-hearing students for college or the world of work by providing services and instruction which allow students to develop their skills to the best of their ability. In this position, you may be required to supervise students during special activities, work with students who have severe emotional or behavioral problems and be working with (or occasionally training) teaching assistants, volunteers, college practicum students, and/or student teachers.

Daily Tasks can be varied accordingly due to the time of year and include:

• Support student communication skills/needs as a related-service per the Individualized Education Program  (IEP).
• Consult with teachers to ensure students receive support they need related to communication.
• Conduct assessments and observations.
• In this position, you may need to teach a range of curriculum levels depending on the needs of the assigned students each year
• Plan and prepare for learning using evidence-based instructional strategies including Reciprocal Teaching
• Evaluating students using a variety of assessments.
• Develop and track IEP's and align instruction with IEP objectives
• Communicate with parents and staff. 
• Give parents feedback on their children's progress through IEP’s.
• Participate in ASL/English Bilingual Professional Development. 

Working Conditions:

Works with active deaf and hard-of-hearing children throughout the day. May be required to supervise students during special activities. May work with students who have severe emotional or behavioral problems with whom physical restraint techniques may need to be used. May work with and train teachers, teaching assistants, volunteers, college practicum students, and/or student teachers. May be exposed to communicable diseases. Walks around and stands a great deal of the time in order to instruct and assess effectively. 

Duties require possible daily exposure to infectious, communicable, and contagious diseases. Teachers at OSD will utilize ASL for interactions with staff, students, and parents. Sign language communication is essential to communicate at OSD.

Required to be a Mandatory Reporter. Some positions may require the ability to obtain certification in basic first aid and pass the agency pupil-transportation vehicle, class-10 examination.

This position will be required to adhere to all of the current COVID restrictions and cleaning requirements set in place by the State of Oregon and mandated Governor’s Executive Orders at all times.
