About the role:
For most of our customers, buying a car is also one of the biggest financial decisions they'll make. That's why we built Clutch's financial services offering, and we're hiring a Senior Data Scientist to help shape what it becomes.
Your mission is to bring a financing-first lens to the entire buyer journey. That means helping customers understand what they can afford earlier, feel confident in their choices, and move from browsing to buying with fewer surprises.
This role starts analysis-heavy. Your first priority will be building a deep understanding of how customers engage with financing today: where they start, where they get stuck, and what helps them move forward. From there, you'll build the models, tools, and experiments that shape how customers experience financing at Clutch, from pre-qualification through purchase.
This is a rare chance to join early and help define how one of Canada's fastest-growing auto retailers approaches financing. You'll sit on Clutch's data team and work closely with our financial services, product, marketing, and engineering teams, and your work will be visible, measurable, and directly tied to both the customer experience and the business.
What you'll do:
- Help define what Cleo becomes. As one of the first data scientists on our financial services work, your analysis will shape the roadmap and play a key role in its delivery.
- Go deep on buyer journey and financing funnel data to understand how customers explore, compare, and choose financing, and where the experience can improve.
- Build the models that power a financing-first shopping experience, surfacing cars customers can realistically afford and helping them understand their monthly payment before they fall in love with a car.
- Predict financing intent and readiness from on-site behaviour so we can meet customers with the right information at the right moment.
- Own pre-qualification end-to-end, from how many customers start it, to where they drop off, to how it changes what they buy, and use those insights to give customers clarity earlier in their journey.
- Model how down payment, trade-in value, and term choices shape customer decisions, and build tools that help customers explore those trade-offs themselves.
- Design and analyze experiments to test new ways of presenting financing across the site and purchase flow.
- Quantify how financing drives Clutch's business, including conversion, order value, and customer lifetime value, and turn your findings into clear recommendations on where to invest next.
- Partner with Clutch data engineering and our external partners to define the data foundations our financial services work needs to scale.
- Work with Clutch’s external financial services partners to refine journeys and programs in ways that improve the experience, conversion and risk performance.
What we're looking for:
Must Haves
- 5+ years of experience as a Data Scientist or in a highly analytical role, with a track record of work that drove real business decisions.
- Decision modeling experience: You've built models or frameworks that shaped real outcomes, such as how customers are guided, what they're shown, or how a funnel is optimized.
- Analysis first: Strong SQL and Python, and you're comfortable starting with messy data and ambiguous questions and working your way to a clear answer.
- Statistical rigor: Solid statistical fundamentals, experimentation experience, and a disciplined approach to validation.
- Customer mindset: You care about how your work shows up for the end customer, not just the metric it moves.
- Excellent communication: You can explain complex trade-offs clearly to business leaders and hold a strong point of view.
Nice to Have
- Experience in fintech, consumer finance, or auto finance.
- Experience with e-commerce funnels, personalization, or customer journey analytics.
- Experience deploying models into production.
- Experience helping build a new product or business line from an early stage.
