What is a Role Player & What You Will Be Doing:

Role-playing is a training exercise in which participants assume the role of another person and act it out. Role players will be given a structured scenario, specific guidelines, and performance objectives to reach a predetermined result. Role playing is designed to aid the Public Safety Professional in promoting understanding of others and developing critical survival skills. Training simulations re-create real-life demands that officers will face on the job, thus ensuring a better-trained and better-equipped officer graduating from the Academy.

DPSST scenario-based training can be physically and emotionally demanding. Role players must be able to stand for extended periods and frequently work outdoors, exposed to the day’s weather conditions. Training continues in most weather, pausing only for hazardous situations. Role players may be exposed to potentially sensitive or emotionally challenging content.

Many scenarios require role players to actively engage recruits in physical confrontations or attempt to evade capture. Participants should be prepared to be handcuffed (in front or behind, while standing or lying on the ground) and experience other forms of physical detainment. Some scenarios may also require running or other vigorous activity.
