HHMI is focused on supporting and moving science forward in a variety of different ways ranging from conducting basic biomedical research, empowering educators, inspiring students, developing the next generation of scientists – even stretching into film and media production. Our Headquarters is in the greater Washington, DC metro area and is home to over 300 employees with expertise in investments, communications, digital production, biomedical sciences, and everything in between. The work housed here supports and augments the groundbreaking research conducted in HHMI labs across the nation. As HHMI scientists continue to push boundaries in laboratories and classrooms, you can be sure that your contributions while working here are making a difference.
This role turns a stack of open requests into an orderly, on-time production line.
BioInteractive is HHMI's free science education program, reaching millions of students and teachers with classroom resources built by scientists, educators, and media developers. The role sits within the production team that keeps those resources moving, from first draft through copyediting, accessibility checks, translation, and publication.
Day to day, the work centers on managing the workflows that make that happen: coordinating with content teams and vendors, keeping Jira and Trello boards accurate, tracking timelines for larger initiatives, and looking for places to automate repetitive steps.
This position works on a hybrid schedule, reporting in-person three days a week to our headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
How to apply
Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a resume along with a cover letter describing their interest in this role and how their experience aligns with it.
We encourage qualified candidates who are eligible to work in the United States to apply. Please note, we are not able to sponsor a visa for this position at this time.
What this role involves
- Assemble and manage workflows for creating and updating resources, coordinating with content and production teams and vendors to move documents through to publication.
- Oversee copyediting, formatting, and accessibility tagging for resource documents, and check materials against publication guidelines.
- Coordinate translation of resources from English to Spanish, deciding what gets prioritized and when.
- Keep team documentation current in Confluence, and maintain file organization across SharePoint and Google Drive.
- Triage and assign production support requests, tracking priority, scope, and status.
- Monitor Jira and Trello boards so resource information and status stay accurate, and build timelines for larger initiatives.
- Track production metrics and look for ways to automate parts of the process, including with AI tools.
What this role requires
- Execution habit. Able to hold a list of a dozen open items and know which three need to move today.
- Comfortable inside other people's systems. Picks up new software fast and uses it to track work, not just record it after the fact.
- Steady under a queue that never empties. New requests land daily, and triage continues without losing track of what already started.
- Careful with details that compound. A wrong PDF tag or a missed translation step causes problems downstream, caught before it ships.
- A collaborator across roles. Coordinates with writers, designers, and vendors without needing a formal handoff for every step.
Nice to have
- Background in teaching, instructional design, or resource production.
- Comfort using AI tools to speed up repetitive production tasks.
- Experience with WCAG accessibility standards or PDF remediation.
What this role is not
- Not a science writing or content development role. This position manages the pipeline resources move through, not the science itself.
- Not a purely administrative post. Patterns in the queue lead to suggested process changes, not just logged tickets.
- Not a one-project-at-a-time job. Multiple resources move through different stages at once, every day.
