Job Description:

Primary Purpose

The Quantum Technologies and Cryogenic Technician will work in an academic environment to assist the Research Associate, TQT research staff and students in conducting research into quantum technologies and devices. This position will work in RAC2 and for the TQT program. The Technician will support general test and measurement systems, and specifically cryogenic measurement platforms. They will perform training, maintenance and testing in coordination with the Research Associate. In coordination with the Research Associate they will develop tools and processes for advancing the use cases for quantum technologies.

Key Accountabilities

Research Support:

• Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

o Operates, maintains and troubleshoots problems with research equipment

o Responsible for maintaining inventory of general research materials and supplies

o Participates in conducting experiments or research work by performing specific assigned tasks, such as data collection

o Operates and maintains the helium liquefaction system, prepares cryogenic dewars for use and monitors cryogen levels across experiments.

o Maintains and develops pumps, vacuum and chiller systems, mechanical, electrical, and optical systems.

o Supports good health and safety practices in laboratory spaces

o Organizes and maintains documentation, operating procedures, experimental records and data; including electronic files and backups

o Assists in analyzing and interpreting experiment results or research data by performing tasks such as assembly, compilation and summary of statistical and other data

o Participates in the organization of users of TQT’s shared resources

o Participates in the development of research related documents, including SOPs

o Provide onboarding for policies and procedures, and operation of equipment

o Assists with special projects and other duties related to TQT


Required Qualifications

Education

• Completion of MS degree in a field of science or engineering, or a bachelor’s degree with significant relevant experience.

Experience

• Minimum one year demonstrated experience in a research academic environment is preferred.

• Hands-on experience in measurement processes, development and maintenance.

• Minimum one year experience with cryogenic measurement tools is preferred, or significant experience with relevant electrical and mechanical systems.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Intermediate computer skills and knowledge of software applications used in an office/lab setting, including word, excel and scientific programming.

• Proven high-quality customer service interactions with faculty, staff and students.

• Proven aptitude for attention to detail.

• Familiarity with electrical measurement tools and practices, ideally including RF and microwave measurement.

• Demonstrated decision-making skills, including the ability to ask probing questions and anticipate customer needs.

• Good communication skills, oral and written.

• Familiarity with software automation, preferably with development experience.
