Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant (Weekend Clinical Research) – Chandler, AZ

Overview & Highlights

  • Compensation: $130,000–$155,000 per year, depending on experience

Location & Logistics

  • Travel: Interoffice travel may be required; company vehicle or mileage reimbursement options available
  • On-Call: Participation in the APP call rotation as applicable

About the Opportunity / A Day in the Life

We are seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join a Phase 1 clinical research team in Chandler, Arizona. This is a specialized opportunity for an APP who understands clinical research and wants direct involvement in the evaluation of emerging therapies while providing high-quality care to patients with liver and gastrointestinal conditions.

Working three 12-hour shifts from Friday through Sunday, you will evaluate and manage standard-of-care and clinical research patients, conduct consultations and pretreatment reviews, perform medical and safety assessments, and support patients throughout their participation in clinical trials.

You will work in a Sub-Investigator capacity, collaborating closely with physicians, clinical research coordinators, recruiters, and other research professionals. Your responsibilities will include understanding assigned protocols, completing research visits, reviewing source documentation and informed consent records, and ensuring clinical decisions align with patient safety and study requirements.

This is a hands-on role with meaningful patient and study ownership. You will help manage patients from their initial evaluation through study completion and closeout while contributing to Phase 1 research and innovative treatment options.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform patient evaluations, consultations, and pretreatment reviews for standard-of-care and clinical research patients.
  • Serve in a Sub-Investigator capacity and support the clinical execution of Phase 1 research protocols.
  • Oversee appropriate aspects of clinical trial patient care and perform medical and safety reviews.
  • Diagnose conditions and make appropriate treatment decisions within established scope of practice.
  • Educate patients regarding therapeutic options available through applicable liver clinical trials.
  • Counsel patients and families and collaborate with physicians regarding appropriate direct-care interventions.
  • Serve as a primary clinical point of contact and assume responsibility for managing assigned patients.
  • Collaborate with clinical research coordinators, recruiters, physicians, and other research personnel to complete study visits.
  • Review source documentation, clinical charting, informed consent records, and study documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of assigned protocols and communicate study requirements to the research team.
  • Perform applicable in-clinic procedures, including FibroScan, when appropriately trained and qualified.
  • Support assigned patients and studies from initial evaluation through study completion and closeout.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Current applicable NP or PA certification
  • Active or eligible license to practice in Arizona
  • Nurse Practitioner candidates must maintain current applicable RN and NP licensure and certification
  • Physician Assistant candidates must maintain applicable NCCPA certification
  • Previous clinical research experience with a strong understanding of research processes and protocols
  • At least 1 year of experience practicing as an NP or PA in a clinic or hospital setting
  • Ability to diagnose and manage clinically complex patients with minimal assistance
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to complete GCP and IATA training upon hire
  • Ability to maintain all certifications required by the applicable department or division
  • Valid documentation and authorization to work in the United States

Preferred Background

  • Previous outpatient gastroenterology and/or hepatology experience
  • Previous Sub-Investigator experience
  • Phase 1 clinical trial experience
  • Experience caring for patients with liver disease
  • Experience independently performing FibroScan procedures
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills
  • Leadership or mentoring experience within clinical research
  • Commitment to continued professional development and additional certifications

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of clinical research processes, protocols, and patient safety requirements
  • Ability to provide patient care with minimal supervision
  • Strong clinical judgment and independent decision-making ability
  • Ability to recognize and proactively address patient concerns
  • Ability to make appropriate referrals based on clinical findings
  • Understanding of quality-of-care metrics and established clinical standards
  • Strong systems and process problem-solving skills
  • Ability to mentor research personnel on standard operating procedures and best practices
  • Resourceful approach to problem-solving and utilizing available clinical resources
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive
  • Experience with or ability to effectively use electronic medical record systems, including eCW
