About the Opportunity / A Day in the Life:
This is a part-time medical assistant role in an outpatient behavioral health practice, built around roughly 10 hours a week. Most of those hours fall in the evening, because the families we care for schedule appointments around work and school. If you want steady, predictable clinical work that fits alongside school, another position, or family commitments, this is a straightforward fit.
Day to day, you are the person who gets patients ready for their visit and keeps the clinical details straight. You greet young patients and their parents, take and record vitals, room them, update the chart, and make sure the provider has what they need before the visit begins. Between visits, you close out the small things that keep care moving — messages to return, forms to complete, pharmacy and provider questions to resolve.
A meaningful part of this job is medication support. You help keep each patient’s medication plan accurate and current, and you are often the person who explains the practical details to a parent on the phone and carries their questions back to the prescribing provider. Accuracy and a calm, unhurried tone matter more here than raw speed.
Why This Role Stands Out:
- A genuinely part-time schedule — about 10 hours a week, not a full-time job compressed into fewer days
- Evening hours that fit around school, another position, or family commitments
- A clearly defined scope — patient preparation, documentation, and medication-plan support — rather than an open-ended list of whatever needs doing
- Direct working contact with the prescribing providers, so you see how treatment decisions are actually made
- Real continuity with the same patients and families over time, instead of one-off encounters
- Work that visibly matters: you are often the person who makes a confusing medication plan make sense at home
What We're Looking For:
- A medical assistant who has completed an accredited medical assistant program and is comfortable working independently within a defined scope
- Someone reliably available for evening and after-hours appointments
- Clear, warm communication with young patients and with parents and caregivers who may be anxious or overwhelmed
- Careful documentation habits — medication details and chart notes have to be right the first time
- Comfort with behavioral health as a setting: confidentiality, boundaries, and a non-judgmental manner
- Professional phone presence with pharmacies and prescribing providers
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Greet and room patients, take and record vital signs, and prepare each patient for their visit
- Document clinical information accurately and promptly in the electronic health record
- Support each patient’s medication plan — keep medication lists current and flag discrepancies to the provider
- Coordinate with parents and caregivers on medication instructions and next steps, so the plan is clearly understood and comfortable at home
- Relay medication questions and refill requests between families, pharmacies, and the prescribing providers
- Prepare charts and clinical information ahead of scheduled appointments
- Return patient and family phone messages within your scope and escalate clinical questions to the provider
- Assist with scheduling and coordinating follow-up appointments
- Keep exam and treatment rooms clean, stocked, and ready, and help manage clinical supplies
- Complete routine clinical forms, releases, and paperwork
- Follow HIPAA, confidentiality, and infection-control standards at all times
- Support the providers and administrative staff with other clinical tasks within the medical assistant scope of practice
Required Qualifications:
- Medical assistant diploma or certificate from an accredited medical assistant program
- Ability to work an on-site, part-time schedule in Phoenix, Arizona, including evening and after-hours appointments
- Accurate documentation and comfort working in an electronic health record
- Professional, clear communication with patients, with parents and caregivers, and with prescribing providers
- Ability to handle sensitive health information in line with HIPAA and practice confidentiality standards
- Authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship
Preferred Background:
- Experience supporting medication management — maintaining medication plans and coordinating with parents and physicians so each family is clear and comfortable with the plan
- CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) or RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) certification
This Role Is Likely a Fit If You…
- Want a true part-time clinical role of about 10 hours a week
- Are available in the evening, when families can actually come in
- Like being the person who makes medical instructions understandable to a worried parent
- Are organized and precise with medication details and chart documentation
- Work calmly with young patients and keep a steady, non-judgmental tone
- Would rather own a defined scope well than juggle a constantly shifting one
This Role May Not Be a Fit If You…
- Have not completed a medical assistant program — the diploma is a firm requirement for this role
- Need full-time hours, or benefits that depend on full-time status
- Cannot commit to evening or after-hours appointments
- Are looking for a remote or hybrid position — this role is on-site
- Would rather not spend part of your day on the phone with parents, pharmacies, and providers
- Prefer a high-volume, fast-turnover clinic pace over careful, relationship-based care
Why Join Us:
We are an outpatient behavioral health practice in the Phoenix area, and our work with young patients only succeeds when their families understand and trust the plan. The medical assistant role sits exactly at that point — a small number of hours with a real amount of impact.
