Position Overview

As a Manager, Process Engineering, you will lead large scale, high impact initiatives and programs that strengthen operational excellence across CarMax. You will serve as a trusted leader, people developer, and role model in continuous improvement, providing thoughtful recommendations, analysis, and guidance that support CarMax standards, best practices, and product innovation. This role requires strong partnership skills, a passion for solving complex problems, and a commitment to improving customer and associate experiences. You will collaborate with Field and Home Office teams, work directly with stores, and balance multiple priorities while driving meaningful, people centered results.

Team Overview

This team plays a key role in leading enterprise level initiatives, advancing continuous improvement, and developing process solutions that support Service Operations and Logistics. As Manager, Process Engineering, you will also serve as the primary point of contact for specialized programs, partnering closely with business areas and mentoring fellow Process Engineers to strengthen overall team capability.

Role Responsibilities

• Apply technical expertise to analyze and resolve cross functional challenges involving tools, equipment, processes, and staffing.
• Lead Kaizen and process improvement activities to uncover opportunities and drive operational enhancements.
• Monitor performance metrics and use root cause analysis to identify sources of failure and deliver corrective actions.
• Guide large scale initiatives by influencing cost, quality, and speed through Human Factors, Ergonomics, layout optimization, and other engineering methods.
• Drive continuous improvement efforts that strengthen Service Operations and Logistics performance.
• Serve as the program owner and primary point of contact for specialized business areas supported by Process Engineering.
• Work effectively in store and shop floor environments, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand when evaluating processes.

Required Qualifications

• Industrial Engineering degree with experience managing projects and leading teams.
• Demonstrates strong coaching skills by observing work, providing timely feedback, and recognizing performance patterns.
• Breaks down complex problems into manageable actions with clear plans for follow up and sustainment.
• Delegates effectively while staying connected to daily operations to support accountability and results.
• Builds trusted relationships by communicating clearly and influencing across levels.
• Leads by example, modeling strong performance behaviors and inspiring teams through change.
• Proficient in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and Visio, and able to work in both office and shop floor environments while wearing CarMax required apparel; travel approximately 20–30%.

Preferred Qualifications

• Approximately 6–10 years of Lean experience.

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the CarMax Home Office in Richmond, VA and Associates will work onsite 4 days per week.

Benefits:

Except as otherwise required by state law, CarMax Associates are entitled to the following paid sick, vacation, and holiday time.

Associates that are considered full-time hourly or commission/incentive eligible:

• To earn up to 48 hours of sick time per year accrued on a per pay period basis and between 80 hours and 200 hours per year of vacation time after a 90 day waiting period depending on years of continuous service with the Company. 
• For 8 hours of pay for each of a total of 6 paid scheduled holidays per year plus 1 floating holiday.  If such an Associate does work on a scheduled holiday due to business need, they are eligible for Holiday Premium Pay. 

Associates considered full-time salaried are entitled to paid time away with no specified limit as needed for sick, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, floating holiday, etc. subject to manager approval.
