This role offers the chance to make a genuine difference in the lives of people experiencing mental health challenges and homelessness who are engaged with the Supported Housing Program. Your lived experience becomes a powerful tool for connection, hope and healing. By walking alongside participants in their recovery journey, you help create moments of safety, encouragement and possibility. Every conversation, every shared experience and every act of support contribute to a service environment that is compassionate, human centred and grounded in recovery orientated practice. This is meaningful work that changes lives in real and lasting ways. 

About the role 

As a Lived Experience Peer Worker, you will work closely with the Housing Support team to provide person centred assistance to participants accessing the Supported Housing Program. You will share your lived experience in a purposeful and empowering way, helping individuals navigate mental health, AOD and community support systems. You will support new participants during induction, contribute to group activities, assist with community engagement and model self-advocacy.

The role also includes practical support such as safely transporting participants to appointments and offering information on community resources. Your insight and empathy help shape a service that is welcoming, respectful and grounded in hope. 

This casual position sits within the Homelessness team in Darwin and reports to the Housing Support Team Leader. Pay is in accordance with a SCHADS Level 3. There is potential for longer term or permanent opportunities subject to business needs.

  • Create moments of connection that help participants feel seen, heard and supported 

  • Walk alongside people as they navigate their recovery journey, offering encouragement and hope 

  • Share your lived experience in ways that empower others and strengthen their confidence 

  • Support new participants to feel welcomed and comfortable as they settle into the program 

  • Help people access services, appointments and community supports that build stability and wellbeing 

  • Contribute to group activities and community engagement that foster belonging and personal growth 

  • Model self-advocacy and positive engagement with services, inspiring participants to take steps toward their goals 

  • Offer practical guidance, emotional support and a steady presence during times of challenge 

  • Uphold dignity, respect and healthy boundaries in every interaction 

  • Bring your insight to team discussions, helping shape a service that is compassionate and recovery orientated 

What you will bring 

  • Lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery 

  • Knowledge of the mental health, AOD or homelessness sector in the Northern Territory 

  • Understanding of recovery orientated approaches and trauma informed practice 

  • Ability to work collaboratively and contribute positively to team culture 

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds 

  • Commitment to maintaining professional boundaries and appropriate disclosure 

  • Motivation to support others and contribute to a safe, inclusive and empowering environment 

  • NT Working with children check or willingness to apply 

What we offer 

  • $40.49 – $43.42 hourly plus superannuation based on experience level and qualifications, exclusive of penalties, allowances, NFP salary packaging
