Learning Support Teacher

Purpose of Role

The Learning Support Teacher will support students with additional learning needs to access the curriculum and participate fully in school life. The role involves working closely with classroom teachers, parents, and the school leadership team to provide targeted support for individuals or small groups of students requiring additional learning assistance.

Learning Support Teacher - Key Responsibilities

Student Support

  • Provide in-class and small group support to students with identified learning needs.

  • Assist students in accessing the curriculum by adapting teaching materials and strategies where required.

  • Support the development of students’ academic, social, and emotional skills.

  • Monitor and track student progress and provide feedback to teachers and the AHT (Learning Support)

Planning & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to differentiate lessons and learning activities for targeted students.

  • Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or learning support plans.

  • Attend relevant meetings with teachers, parents, and leadership regarding student progress.

Assessment & Monitoring

  • Observe and assess students’ learning needs and progress.

  • Maintain accurate records of interventions and support strategies used.

  • Provide input for reports related to student development.

Inclusive Education

  • Promote an inclusive learning environment within the classroom.

  • Encourage independence and confidence among students with learning challenges.

  • Support teachers in implementing strategies that meet diverse learning needs.

Communication

  • Communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and the school leadership team regarding student progress.

  • Work closely with the AHT (Learning Support) to ensure appropriate support strategies are implemented.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, or related field.

  • Experience working with students with Special Educational Needs.

  • Strong understanding of inclusive teaching strategies and differentiated instruction.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and support staff.

  • Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.

  • Flexible and proactive approach to supporting learning.
