Lead Software Engineer (Web Platform)

As a Senior II and Tech Lead for our Web Platform team, you will be responsible for leading the technical direction and supporting the engineering effort of a team focused on building and maintaining  the core web application tooling and client services that support all of our web-based clients.  This includes our web application, Electron-based desktop client, browser extension, and CLI, as well as other clients and additional Products in the future.  You will be expected to own and understand the entirety of the team’s domain, and be able to support the other engineers on the team as well as engage in well-reasoned discussions with other technical leaders in the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Update and maintain Bitwarden's web monorepo tooling, including our nx monorepo packaging infrastructure, our webpack build pipelines, and our npm package management systems.
• Drive repo-wide modernization initiatives, such as migrating to Vite and pnpm or adopting nx, including any coordination with other teams within the organization.
• Work closely with your manager to maintain  the technical roadmap for the team, ensuring that core platform dependencies are up to date and emerging technologies are considered for potential adoption.
• Unblock and support other engineers on the team.
• Collaborate with other Tech Leads to ensure that cross-team technical direction is aligned when initiatives span team boundaries.
• Serve as a representative of the team in technical discussions and be able to speak authoritatively about your domain.
• Set the example for thorough code reviews, using them to spread knowledge on the team and ensure high standards for code quality.
• Occasionally review & approve bug fixes submitted by the user community

WHAT YOU BRING TO BITWARDEN

• Expertise in modern web application build and packaging pipelines, including strong demonstrated experience with managing and updating nx, webpack, Vite, npm, and pnpm.
• Extensive experience with cross-platform web application development - understanding how to work within and support Electron environments and browser extensions and the limitations and nuances of their APIs.
• A bias for long-horizon thinking, ensuring that decisions made today build stable and maintainable tooling for the future.
• Experience on a Platform team, where other teams are your customers, and you are responsible for ensuring that their feature development can be done with tooling as a support and not a hindrance.
• Experience using AI tooling in your development and testing workflow (Anthropic Claude preferred)
• Collaborative and adaptable mindset
• Openness and authenticity combined with excellent communication skills
• Excitement and enthusiasm for open source and for better internet security 
• Excellent problem-solving skills – you might not know all the answers, but you know how to find and communicate the solution
