About the Opportunity

The People team advances TAAF's mission by ensuring that every member of our team is supported, engaged, and equipped to do their best work in service of safety, belonging, and prosperity for the AAPI community.  Reporting to the Head of People, the Human Resources Manager plays a key role in delivering TAAF's People strategy and employee experience. This position manages core HR programs and processes across the employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding to benefits, performance, engagement, and offboarding, while serving as a collaborative partner to employees, people managers, and the Head of People.

The ideal candidate is a proactive, collaborative HR professional who sees the People function as both an operational partner and a driver of the employee experience. They are a force multiplier, someone who brings structure, follow-through, sound judgment, and a solutions-oriented mindset to the work, enabling the People team and broader organization to operate more effectively.  This person will work closely with the Head of People as a trusted partner across the full employee lifecycle, helping translate People strategy into thoughtful, practical, and consistent employee experiences. They are comfortable rolling up their sleeves, independently owning projects and processes, collaborating across teams, and identifying solutions before problems become barriers. They balance attention to detail with an understanding of the bigger picture and are energized by building and improving systems in a growing organization.

Responsibilities 

Employee Experience & Talent

  • Partner with the Head of people to manage recruitment and hiring processes from job posting through offer, partnering with hiring managers to deliver an organized and thoughtful candidate experience
  • Partner with the Head of People to design and deliver engaging onboarding, orientation, professional learning, recognition, and employee engagement experiences
  • Coordinate employee transactions, including onboarding and offboarding, exit interviews
  • Help deliver a consistent high-quality employee experience across the full employee lifecycle, identify opportunities to strengthen engagement, connection, and belonging
  • Serve as an accessible resource to employees and people managers on day-to-day employee matters, policies, performance expectations, feedback, and HR processes, escalating complex or sensitive matters to the Head of People as appropriate
  • Support performance management cycles, including goal setting, feedback conversations, performance documentation, and performance improvement plans, helping ensure consistent and equitable practices across the team

People Operations, Benefits & Compliance

  • Manage day-to-day People operations, including HRIS data, personnel records, employee status changes, timekeeping/PTO coordination with Payroll, and other employee lifecycle transactions, ensuring accurate and timely information across systems
  • Support benefits administration and open enrollment, partnering with employees, Finance, brokers, and vendors to ensure a smooth and responsive employee experience
  • Maintain compliant personnel records and support multi-state leave administration, workers' compensation, unemployment claims, and other employment compliance requirements in partnership with the Head of People
  • Monitor applicable city, state, and federal employment requirements and support the implementation and communication of policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Produce and maintain People data and reporting, including headcount, turnover, engagement, and other workforce metrics, identifying trends and opportunities to improve processes and inform-decision making

People Team Partnership & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner closely with the Head of People to translate People strategy and organizational priorities into practical programs, processes, communications, and employee experiences
  • Own assigned People projects and initiatives from planning through implementation, proactively identify needs, solving problems, communicating progress, and ensuring timely follow-through
  • Evaluate People processes and systems and recommend improvements that increase efficiency, consistency, and quality of the employee experience
  • Serve as a collaborative, solutions-oriented partner across the organization, bringing sound judgement, curiosity, and willingness to step in where needed to advance People team organizational priorities

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in an HR generalist, HR business partner or similar role supporting multiple areas of the employee lifecycle
  • Undergraduate degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Working knowledge of HR operations, employee relations, benefits administration, recruitment, performance management, and employment compliance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting employees across multiple states/locations; familiarity with New York and California employment practices
  • Proficiency in HRIS, applicant tracking systems, and Google Workspace; experience with Workable, JustWorks, and Employee Navigator is a plus.

Working Hours, Location & Schedule

  • In-Office Days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in our New York City office 
  • Remote Days: Mondays and Fridays offer work-from-home flexibility
  • Travel: Occasional travel 
  • Requires occasional weekend, off-hours, or evening work

Benefits

The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) is committed to salary transparency and pay equity. The hiring range for this position is $92,000 – $103,000 which is carefully benchmarked against the market to ensure competitiveness.  Final offers are determined through a structured analysis of relevant experience, skills, and role scope to ensure internal pay equity.
